ULAAN BATAAR, Mongolia – The United States won four medals on the first day of the Mongolia Open in women’s freestyle wrestling on Saturday.
Claiming silver medals were two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Randi Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 69 kg/152 lbs.
Lampe won her first three bouts to reach the championship finals, where she was defeated by Tatyana Amanzol of Kazakhstan. Amanzol has been fifth in the World three times, and also was fifth at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Miller also won her first three matches to reach the finals. Among her victories was over 2012 World champion and four-time World medalist Elena Pirozhkova of the USA in the semifinals. Pirozhkova finished fifth.
Winning bronze medals were two-time Junior World champion Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and Jennifer Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs.
Anthony’s only loss came to eventual champion Tatyana Amanzol of Kazakhstan.
“We wrestled hard today but found some areas where we need to improve. It is important for us to stay in our positions and not wrestle someone else's match. We learned a lot about ourselves today,” said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner.
More complete results will be posted when available.
