OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Four talented high school girls were able to repeat as champions at the USA Wrestling Girls Folkstyle National Championships at the Freede Center on the campus of Oklahoma City University.
Winning a “double title” for the second straight year, which included winning both the Cadet and Junior divisions at the Girls Folkstyle Nationals, was Ronna Heaton of South Dakota at 112 pounds. In a rematch of Friday’s Cadet finals, she edged Californian Gracie Figueroa of the Titan Mercury WC, 2-0.
The other four repeating champions were Dominique Parrish of Team California USA at 117, Becka Leathers of Choctaw WC of Oklahoma at 125, Kendall Reusing of the Titan Mercury WC of California at 172 and Lakiya Wagoner of Team California USA at 198.
Parrish defeated 2014 Junior Nationals freestyle champion Marizza Birrueta of Popeye Wrestling of Washington in the finals. 7-6. Last year, Parris won the event at 121 pounds.
Leathers defeated 2014 Folkstyle Nationals runner-up Gabrielle Garcia of the Titan Mercury WC in California by pin in 4:36. Leathers and Garcia have been teammates on the U.S. Cadet World Team. Leathers will attend Oklahoma City University next year.
Reusing also scored a finals pin, putting away Audrey Bucher of Wisconsin in the finals in just 26 seconds. Reusing has signed with Simon Fraser University.
Wagoner defeated fellow Californian Jackie Quinones in the finals, 5-0.
In one of the high profile finals, 2014 Folkstyle Nationals runner-up Jessika Rottier of Wisconsin defeated returning national champion Kenya Spencer of Michigan Women’s Wrestling in the 159 finals, 3-2. Last year, Rottier was the runner-up at 139 pounds.
Another double champion, winner of both the Cadet and Junior titles, was Mckayla Campbell of Ohio Way, who beat Vayle Baker of the Benton Tiger WC, 8-5 in the 97 pound finals.
The champion at 130, Alexandria Liles of Best Trained Wrestling, has now won this event four straight years on age different levels, winning in Girls Div. II in 2012, in Schoolgirl in 2013 and 2014, and now as a Junior in 2015.
