USA Wrestling will be sending an experienced and talented team of women’s freestyle wrestlers to the 2015 Women’s World Cup in St. Petersburg, Russia, Mar. 7-8.

The World Cup is the international dual meet championships, one of the most important events of the year. The top eight teams in the world will compete in dual meets. This year’s field includes (alphabetically) Azerbaijan, Japan, Russia, Mongolia, Sweden, Poland, Ukraine and the United States.

The event will mark the conclusion of United World Wrestling’s Super 8 women’s wrestling campaign, the international federation’s two-month campaign to raise awareness for women’s wrestling and grow female participation at all levels of the sport. It is also during Women’s Wrestling Week, which was declared by USA Wrestling from March 2-8.

The U.S. team is loaded, with an Olympic medalist, three Olympians, two World champions, four World medalists and 10 past U.S. World Team members.

2008 Olympic bronze medalist Randi Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) is scheduled to compete at 69 kg/152 lbs.

Two-time World champion and four-time World medalist Adeline Gray (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) will wrestle at 75 kg/165 lbs. and 2012 World champion and four-time World medalist Elena Pirozhkova (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC) will enter at 69 kg/152 lbs.

The three Olympians on the team are Miller, plus 2012 Olympians Pirozhkova and Kelsey Campbell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 58 kg/128 lbs.

Additional World medalists on the team include two-time World medalists Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo,/Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs.

Additional past World Team members on the roster are Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 53 kg/114.5 lbs., Alli Ragan (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 58 kg/128 lbs. and Veronica Carlson (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

“This event gives us a real sense of where we’re at as a team. Any time we can compete against the other top teams, it gives us a good check and balance of where we’re at in this year-long process. We don’t get many chances at wrestling in an event as a team. All of our competitions, other than the World Cup, are individual competitions. This is truly the only event that we have that is a team competition; we will either win as a team or lose as a team. I think it’s a good event for all of us to come together and realize that we have a lot of strengths if we use each other to feed off of and move each other forward,” said Women’s National Coach Terry Steiner.

Teams were selected based upon their performance at the 2014 World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. There, the U.S. women placed third, its second straight year as the third-place team.

United World Wrestling has already conducted the draw for this year’s World Cup. Based upon last year’s World Championships results, the No. 3 United States drew into Group A, along with No. 1 Japan, No. 7 Poland and No. 8 Azerbaijan. Group B will feature No. 2 Russia, No. 4 Ukraine, No. 5 Sweden and No. 6 Mongolia.

“I think we have a team that can win. Of course we’re going over there to win, but it’s also about how we’re wrestling, how we’re doing. We’ve focused a lot of energy this past fall and early winter on trying to add to our repertoire of techniques. I want to see how we’re wrestling. I don’t want to just see us winning; I want to see how we’re winning. Are we just squeaking by on matches, or are we dominating?,” said Steiner.

The last time the United States won the Women’s World Cup was in 2004, where the event was held in Tokyo, Japan.
