While many people around the nation were doing last minute shopping or preparing for family holiday gatherings, two of USA Wrestling’s World Champions were back in their home community helping some local kids who are dealing with illness.

Maryland natives Kyle Snyder and Helen Maroulis were special guests of the Casey Cares Foundation, whose mission is to provide “ongoing, uplifting programs with a special touch to critically ill children and their families.”

Snyder and Maroulis met with about a dozen children at 39 Minute Workout and Wellness in Ellicott City on December 23. The kids had a chance to wear their World Championship belts and put their World gold medals around their necks. They also had a chance to try a short workout run by Snyder and Maroulis, doing a variety of physical skills.

Casey Baines, the founder of Casey Cares, was pleased with how well things went.

“We reached out to both Kyle and Helen knowing they are both Marylanders. We wanted to get them more involved in what we are doing. They were more than thrilled,” Baynes said to the Baltimore Sun. “This is their holiday, and they’re taking today to spend it with our children instead of spending it with their families, which means the world to us because these kids need diversion. They need to think about besides the fact that they have Leukemia, or cancer, or sickle cell. We need to make sure they feel like kids.”

The kids there had a wonderful experience meeting real life sports heroes. But the World champion wrestlers also had a great experience spending time with the kids.

“Parents, coaches, different clubs, organizations, schools – it really does take an entire village,” Maroulis told USA Today. “I think you can’t put a value on an experience or what positive words might do for someone because there’s been times when it’s like, that’s just what I needed to hear or meeting this person was so inspiring. I would love to make myself available for that if I can serve in that way.”

“It’s awesome, it’s fun. I love doing stuff like this. I don’t get the opportunity to do it as much as I want to. I’m glad they reached out to me because any time I can do something like this I want to,” Snyder said in a USA Today interview.
