SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzogovina – Five U.S. wrestlers competed in Greco-Roman on Wednesday and did not advance past their opening matches at the UWW Cadet World Championships.

Falling in their openers on Wednesday were Eric Barnett of Wisconsin at 42 kg, Brady Koontz of Wisconsin at 46 kg, Jake Allar of Minnesota at 69 kg, Logan Gruszka of Minnesota at 69 kg and Wyatt Koelling of Utah at 85 kg.

All five were unable to advance to the repechage rounds, when their opponents failed to reach the gold-medal finals in their weights.

“It was a disappointing second day. They guys wrestled hard and came up short. We have to go back to the States and get better. We need to have more experience with international matches as a country. We are getting closer, but not where we should be,” said U.S. coach Nate Engel.

The Greco-Roman portion of the event ended on Wednesday. The top performance for the USA came Tuesday, when Taylor LaMont of Utah placed fifth at 58 kg/127.7 lbs. He dropped close bouts to the 2014 Cadet World champion in the semifinals and the 2014 Cadet World silver medalist in the bronze-medal round, while winning two other matches convincingly. It was his third straight year on the U.S. Cadet World Team.

Three other U.S. wrestlers placed in the top 10 of their weights on Tuesday, scoring team points for the USA. Anthony Piscopo of Pennsylvania was seventh at 100 kg, Dominick Demas of Ohio was ninth at 63 kg and Paul Bianchi of Wisconsin was 10th at 54 kg.

“My hat is off to Taylor LaMont. He wrestled extremely tough and was extremely close to winning a medal. I want to thank USA Wrestling for an amazing opportunity and look forward to coaching again in the future,” said Engel.

The United States placed 16th in the team standings with 13 points. Russia won the team title with 69 points, with Iran in second with 41 points and Turkey in third with 39 points.
