World Championships preview in women’s freestyle wrestling at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.

The dominant lightweight in women’s wrestling has been Eri Tosaka of Japan, who has won the last two World Championships in this weight class and enters Las Vegas with a No. 1 UWW ranking. Tosaka continues a tradition of talented Japanese stars in this class. She added an Asian Games title in the spring, giving her five straight gold medals at major events.
Expected to challenge again is 2009 World champion and 2012 Olympic silver medalist Maria Stadnyk of Azerbaijan, who was third in the 2014 World Championships. Stadnyk won a gold at the inaugural European Games this year, and added titles at the respected Klippan Open in Sweden and the Poland Open.
Taking the 2014 World silver medal was veteran Iwona Matkowska of Poland, who also boasts a 2006 World bronze medal. She won a World Military gold medal in late 2014, and has added four more international medals this year, including a bronze at the European Games.
Carrying the banner of the host United States is two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe, who most recently finished fifth at the 2014 World Championships. Lampe has had an up and down season this year, but has the strength and experience to beat anybody in the weight when she is wrestling well.
China is always talented at this weight class, and has extensive depth in their program. Holding a No. 3 FILA ranking is Sun Yanan, the 2013 World champion at 51 kg who is down to 48 kg. She won golds at the Grand Prix of Paris and the Grand Prix of Spain this season. They could enter 2011 World bronze medalist Shasha Zhao, 2012 World bronze medalist Xiaomei Li or 2013 World bronze medalist Cheng Xu, but we expect Sun.
Russia has some strong options at this weight, including two athletes ranked in the top 10 in the world, Valentina Islamova and Nadezhda Federova. Islamova won bronze at the European Games and won the Yarygin Grand Prix in Russia and is on the Russian roster. Fedorova won the European U23 Championships this year. Neither has been on a Senior World team, as Alina Moreva was the entry last year.
Canada’s Genevieve Morrison won a Pan American Games gold this year, with a win over Lampe. She boasts 2010 and 2012 University World titles and medals at many international events. She has claimed this spot over 2012 World champion Jessica MacDonald, who was third last year’s World Championships at 51 kg.
North Korea has a strong entry, 2014 World bronze medalist Kim Hyon-Gyong, who added an Asian Championships bronze medal this year. Also winning a bronze at the Asian Championships was Tatyana Amanzhol-Bakatyuk of Kazakhstan, who has been fifth in the World Championships two times, and also was also fifth at the 2008 Olympic Games.
Bulgaria’s Elitsa Yankova is a rising star. A 2013 Junior World champion, she placed second in the 2015 European Games this year. Emilia Vuc of Romania was fifth in the World last year, and was second in the U23 Europeans as well as the Corneanu Memorial in Romania. Natalya Pulkovska of Ukraine has won silver medals at the respected Poland Open and the Dan Kolov in Bulgaria.
The Pan American nations have some strong talent in this division, including Mayelis Caripa Castillo of Venezuela, Carolina Castillo Hidalgo of Colombia and Patricia Bermudez of Argentina. Caripa Castillo has won two past World medalist. Bermudez was eighth in the world last year. Tsogtbaatar Byambazaya of Mongolia has been showing talent this year, with four recent international medalis, including a silver medal at the 2014 Military World Championships. 2012 World bronze medalist Jacqueline Schellin of Germany continues to challenge, placing fifth at the 2015 European Games.
Others to watch include Evin Demirhan of Turkey, Fredrika Petersson of Sweden, Yana Rattigan Stadnik of Great Britain, Mercedesz Denes of Hungary and Julie Sabatie of France.
With Eri Tosaka looking to win a third straight World title, the rest of the field is gunning for her. There are six spots in the Olympic Games up for grabs here, so expect very intense action right from the start.
