Arendt, a past U.S. Open champion, will face 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Mindaugas Mizgaitis of Lithuania in the semifinals, which begin at 2:00 p.m.

“That was his first match after taking some time off. He wanted to get right back into it. He showed that he is still very powerful. In the semis, he has the Lithuanian, who was an Olympic medalist. He is excited about wrestling him and seeing where he is at this point in the season,” said U.S. coach Jason Loukides.

Three other U.S. wrestlers dropped matches to world-class opponents, but have a chance to get into the repechage rounds if their opponents win in the semifinals.

MSgt Sherwin Severin of the U.S. Air Force opened with a 4-1 win over Abdelhak Benzanoune of Algeria at 80 kg. Severin scored a takedown in the first period for a 2-0 lead, but Benzanoune closed it to 2-1 on a passivity penalty against Severin. Benzanoune attempted a pushout on the edge in the closing seconds, but Severin countered and spun behind for the winning takedown.

The structure of the Greco-Roman tournament differs from the first two days of freestyle. The tournament starts each morning at 9:00 a.m., which includes the preliminaries and the quarterfinals. After a lunch break, the athletes return at 2:00 p.m. for the semifinals and repechage. The finals follow immediately at 3:30 p.m. Because there is no break between Session II and the finals in Session III, we will post our first story each day after the quarterfinals.
