RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Four U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers won gold medals, and all 10 Americans entered claimed a medal at the Brazil Cup on Saturday.
The U.S. champions were

Hochstrasser, the former Boise State star, defeated 2014 Junior World champion Khasankhuseyn Badrudinov of Russia in the championship finals, 13-7. He won four matches on the way to the gold.
Ruschell, who was a star at Wisconsin, stopped 2014 Ivan Yarygin International bronze medalist Mulid Lampezhev of Russia, 13-7. He won four matches, including an opening win over fellow American Logan Massa.
Bergman, an NCAA runner-up for Ohio State and 2010 U.S. World Team member, pinned Rasul Magomedov of Russia in the finals. He also had a pin in the semifinals over Canadian Manjot Sandhu, and an opening win over Russian star Anzor Urishev of Russia, 9-0.
Rey went 4-0 in a five-athlete roundrobin, including a 4-0 win over eventual silver medalist Islam Bakhmudkadiev of Russia.
“We were nine for nine in the medal round. It was a good effort from everybody. J.D. Bergman was dominating as was Zach Rey. Hochstrasser came from behind in two matches and kept scoring points. Kyle Ruschell gets the hear award for coming from behind in all of his matches. The Juniors did very well, and their future looks bright,” said National Freestyle Coach Bruce Burnett.
The other six American wrestlers on the tour dropped one match, but wrestled back to claim bronze medals. They included:
• Matt McDonough (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC) at 57 kg/125.5 lbs.
• Joey McKenna (Towaco, N.J./Lehigh Valley AC) at 61 kg/134 lbs.
• Logan Massa (St. Johns, Mich./Massa’s Maniacs) at 70 kg/154 lbs.

Three of the medals were won by top FILA Junior age wrestlers who entered in the Senior division at this event, McKenna, Massa and Valencia. McKenna was a 2014 Junior World silver medalist and Valencia was on the 2014 FILA Junior World team.
“The Brazil Cup has been a very valuable competition for our team. We saw very strong competitors having most of the western hemisphere represented, as well as Russia and Japan, with which our team had several great matches. In the final round our guys went nine for nine in total, all 10 athletes winning medals, and with four gold. We are making progress and are looking ahead. It has been a great start to this new season as well as an opportunity to get a feel for logistics on the ground in Rio de Janeiro,” said Assistant National Freestyle Coach Bill Zadick.
