Cataline wins gold, USA adds four medals on final day of Open Cup of Russia

NOVOCHEBOKSARK, Russia – Jackie Cataline (Alhambra, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) won a gold medal at 75 kg/165 lbs. and the USA won four more medals on the final day of the Open Cup of Russia on Saturday.
Cataline won four straight matches to claim the title, including a 3-1 win over 2005 World champion Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) in the championship finals.
Cataline defeated two Russian opponents, and also stopped 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Randi Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), 6-5 in the second round.
Cataline, a 2014 U.S. Open champion, has won international gold medals two weeks in a row, after winning a gold medal at the Bill Farrell International in New York last Saturday.
Smith won her first two matches over Russian opponents, with a pin and a technical fall.
Joining Smith as a silver medalist for the United States was 2014 U.S. World Team Trials runner-up Erin Clodgo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.
Clodgo opened with a 12-5 win over two-time World bronze medalist Sally Roberts (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), 12-5. In the semifinals, she scored an 11-0 technical fall over a Russian opponent. In the finals, she was defeated by two-time World University silver medalist Inna Trazhukova of Russia, 0-11.
Taking a bronze medal at 58 kg/128 lbs. was 20012 Olympian Kelsey Campbell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), who finished with a 3-1 record. Campbell was defeated in the semifinals by 2014 World silver medalist Valeria Koblova (Russia), 0-8. She rebounded with a technical fall win over a Russian in the bronze-medal bout.
Two Americans placed fifth, Jessica Medina (Champaign, Ill./Sunkist Kids) at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. and Randi Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 75 kg/165 lbs.
The USA place second in the team standings, behind host Russia which won the title and ahead of third-place Mongolia.
Team USA won three medals on Friday and four on Saturday, to finish with seven medals for the tournament. Joining Cataline as a champion from the USA was two-time World medalist Helen Maroulis (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids), who won the 55 kg/121 lbs. title on Friday.
