Two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe, shown at the 2014 Dave Schultz Memorial, is among the 15 U.S. women competing in Russia this weekend.
The U.S. women’s national team will take a competition and training tour to Russia, and will wrestle at the Open Cup of Russia in Novocheboksark, Nov. 14-15. A number of World and Olympic medalists will participate for Team USA.
Among the U.S. entries will be 2008 World champion and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Clarissa Chun (Morgantown, W.Va./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Randi Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) is slated for 69 kg/152 lbs.
2005 World champion Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) is among five past World medalists on the tour. Along with Chun, there are three two-time World medalists on the U.S. team, Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Helen Maroulis (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Sally Roberts (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 60 kg/132 lbs.
2012 Olympian Kelsey Campbell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) will wrestle at 58 kg/128 lbs. Other past World Team members on the tour are Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Jessica Medina (Champaign, Ill./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Jenna Burkert (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Veronica Carlson (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 69 kg/152 lbs.
This will be the first major international competition overseas in the new season for the U.S. women’s program, which is coming off back-to-back third-place finishes at the last two World Championships.
“We need to get back to work. We come off the World Championships and are in a training phase. This jumps us back into competition mode. We go to Russia, where it will be a hostile environment. We will face the No. 2 team in the world. We will see where we are at right away,” said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner.
Many of the wrestlers on the tour competed this past weekend at the Bill Farrell International in Hempstead, N.Y., including champions Lampe, Miller and Cataline.
