UPDATE: Eight Americans win Bill Farrell International; Miracle wins women’s OW award

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Eight U.S. wrestlers won gold medals during the Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle competition at the 2014 Bill Farrell International at Mack Arena on the campus of Hofstra University on Saturday.
American women’s wrestler Kayla Miracle (Campbellsville, Ky./Sunkist Kids), a 2013 Junior World bronze medalist, won the Outstanding Wrestler award in women’s freestyle after a strong showing at 55 kg/121 lbs.
Miracle, a freshman at Campbellsville University, defeated Missouri Valley College star Jacarra Winchester (USA/Titan Mercury WC), 10-4 in the finals. She upset 2014 World bronze medalist Jillian Gallays of Canada in the semifinals by technical fall.
“I knew like my all my matches today, I had to wrestle my match. (Winchester) is really explosive, quick and technical. I knew I had to focus on me. I have been focusing a lot on continuing to wrestle, no matter how big the scramble is or how tired I am. If I am stretched out a lot, I try to find my way back,” said Miracle.
Two of the women’s finals were rematches for the finals of the 2014 World Team Trials process.
Two-time World bronze Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) defeated Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Titan Mercury WC), 5-0 in the finals at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. Lampe had beaten Anthony in the World Team Trials finals in June, winning two of three bouts there.
“I think I wrestled good. I stayed in good position all the time. I never really felt out of position. That is what I have been focusing on, keeping my hands where they need to be, where my footwork needs to be, just the really small basic things. That really helped out today,” said Lampe.
2008 Olympic bronze medalist Randi Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./Army WCAP) stopped Veronica Carlson (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC), 4-1 at 69 kg/152 lbs. Miller beat Carlson in a Special Wrestle-off for the 2014 World Team in July, winning two of their three matches there.
“She is one of the toughest American competitors out there. Her results speak for themselves. It’s always a tough match with her. Today was all about getting better. It’s about movement, about finding angles and finding ways to score. I didn’t have the best showing at Worlds, so this whole season is dedicated to getting better,” said Miller.
2014 U.S. Open champion Jackie Cataline (Alhambra, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) was the champion at 75 kg/165 lbs., defeating Brittany Roberts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), 6-0.
Other individual women’s champions were Nanami Irie of Japan at 53 kg/116.5 lbs., Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan at 58 kg/128 lbs., Yoshimi Kayama of Japan at 60 kg/132 lbs. and two-time Olympic bronze medalist Jackeline Renteria of Colombia at 63 kg/138.75 lbs
The Outstanding Wrestler in Greco-Roman was 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Johan Euren of Sweden, who dominated at 130 kg/286 lbs. In the finals, he pinned Erik Nye (Colorado Springs, Colo./Army WCAP) in 4:02.
2012 Olympian Ben Provisor (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) won a five-athlete roundrobin at 80 kg/176 lbs., finishing with a 4-0 record.
“I was happy to get a bunch of matches in. It has been awhile since I’ve had a lot of matches because of the injuries I sustained the last two years. I am hoping for a really good season, a healthy season. When I wrestled in the finals at the Trials (in July), I was not 100%. I want to get back to my 2012 Olympic form and train hard every day,” said Provisor.
Jon Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo/U.S. Army) went up two weight classes to win the gold at 85 kg/187 lbs, beating Zac Nielsen (Zimmerman, Minn./Minnesota Storm), 4-1 in the finals. Nielsen is No. 2 in the USA at this weight class.
“He is strong and he is talented. I knew some of his good moves, so I tried to stay away from his strengths, stick to my strengths and exploit some of his weaknesses. I stuck to my game plan and it worked out,” said Anderson.
Kendrick Sanders (Homestead, Fla./NYAC/USOTS) was the champion at 71 kg/156 lbs, scoring a technical fall over Bo Beckman (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC), 8-0
Alejandro Sancho (Marquette, Mich./NYAC/USOTS) was also dominant in the finals at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., getting a tech. fall over Manuel Lopez Salcedo of Mexico, 8-0.
Other individual champions in Greco-Roman were Mostafa Hassan of Egypt at 59 kg/130 lbs. , Robert Rosengren of Sweden at 75 kg/165 lbs. and Robert Avanesyan of Israel at 98 kg/217 lbs.
The men’s freestyle competition will be held Sunday, with a live stream on Flowrestling.
