Cadet World champ Alo among 12 champs in Junior Nationals women's freestyle

FARGO, N.D. – What a past few days it has been for Hawaii’s Teshya Alo. 

Five days after winning a Cadet World title, Alo rolled past 2012 Cadet World silver medalist Kayla Miracle of Indiana by a 10-0 technical fall in the Junior Nationals women’s freestyle finals Tuesday night at the Fargo Dome.

Alo repeated as Junior Nationals champion. She also won Cadet Nationals titles here in 2012 and 2013. Miracle will compete at the Junior Worlds next month. 

Alo was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament on Tuesday.

“Kayla’s really aggressive,” Alo said. “She’s very tough. I’m very glad I got a chance to wrestle her. She’s really good. I came here to have fun and I did. I want to win the Olympics in wrestling.” 

California repeated as team champion with 112 points. Washington was second with 52 points and Texas third with 48.

New York’s Alexis Porter won her third straight Junior Nationals title after defeating Florida’s Shamera McTier 5-2 in the 148 finals. Porter will compete at the Junior Worlds early next month. 

California’s Gabby Garcia turned in an impressive performance with a quick pin over Arizona’s Areana Villaescusa in the 121 finals. Garcia placed fifth at last week’s Cadet Worlds and was a 2013 Cadet Nationals champion.

Colorado’s Maya Nelson repeated as Junior Nationals champion after defeating 2014 Cadet Nationals champion Cierra Foster of Idaho by technical fall in the 125 finals. 

“I wrestled aggressively and was able to dominate,” Nelson said. “I feel a lot lighter and a lot faster at this weight class. I felt real good out there.

“I really, really want to make the 2016 Olympics, so I’m going to try for that.”

Washington’s Kiaya Van Scoyoc repeated as Junior Nationals champion after pinning Rachel Bridges of Texas in the 198 finals.

California’s Kendall Reusing, eighth at last week’s Cadet Worlds, pinned 2014 Cadet Nationals champion Alexis Bleau of New York in the 159 pounds.

South Dakota’s Ronna Heaton earned a technical fall over California’s Harmonie Roberts in the 105 finals. Heaton won a Cadet Nationals title here on Saturday. 

Washington’s Marizza Birrueta took control in the second period en route to pinning Cassidy Jasperson of Texas in the 112 finals. Birrueta was second in Cadet Nationals last year.

Dominique Parrish defeated Madison Tung 8-6 in an all-California final at 117 pounds.

Washington’s Desiree Zavala used a strong second period to win by technical fall over Iowa’s Cassandra Herkelman in the 139 finals.

Taylor Rosario defeated Clarc Walker by technicall fall in all-Texas battle at 172. Rosario was second in the Cadet Nationals on Saturday. 

Twins Regina and Marina Doi of California were declared co-champion at 97 pounds.
