Timothy Young takes fifth of final day of Greco-Roman Cadet Worlds

SNINA, Slovakia – Day two of the 2014 FILA Cadet World Championships was another difficult day for the U.S. Greco-Roman squad.

Illinois standout Timothy Young provided the U.S. with its lone medal match of the day.

Young lost his first match to last year’s Cadet World Champion Soslan Fanziev of Azerbaijan 0-9, but was pulled into the repechage after Fanziev made the finals. Young then defeated Toni Metsomaki of Finland 4-2 to earn a spot in the bronze medal bout where he would fall to Aliaksandr Baraban of Belarus 0-3 to finish in fifth place at 85 kg/187.4 lbs.

“"A good effort on the part of today's wrestlers. Tim Young made the most of his day and nearly brought home a bronze medal at 85 kg,” said Rob Prebish, U.S. Cadet World Team coach.

Blairstown, New Jersey product Mason Manville went 1-1 on the day at 69 kg/152 lbs. Manville picked up a fall over Elmar Nuraliiev of Ukraine in his first bout before dropping a 5-2 decision to Berg Zebastian of Sweden. Manville finished in ninth place overall.

Manville will compete again for the U.S. at the Cadet World Championships this Saturday, in freestyle.

Both Jason Holmes (Mesa, Ariz.) and Nick Reenan (Dallas, Texas) lost tough opening bouts and were eventually eliminated from the competition when their respective opponents failed to make the finals.

India’s Anil downed Holmes 9-17 and Reenan lost to Turkey’s Dogukan Kuru 2-6.

“Our young Greco wrestlers need more opportunities to compete with the best in the world. What we bring with heart, we lack with experience,” Prebish said.

Action from Snina, Slovakia continues tomorrow with women’s freestyle as the U.S. is in search of its first medal at the FILA Cadet Worlds. Four U.S. women have weighed in and received their draws for Thursday’s competition.
