Metcalf goes 1-1 at 65 kg at Yarygin Grand Prix in Russia

KRASNOYARSK, Russia - Two-time World Team member Brent Metcalf (Iowa City, Iowa/New York AC/Titan Mercury WC) finished with a 1-1 record, but was not eligible for the repechage at the Ivan Yarygin Memorial International on Saturday, January 25.
The Ivan Yarygin Memorial is considered one of the world’s best freestyle tournaments each year, with many Russian athletes, competitors from the former Soviet republics as well as star athletes from other nations.
Metcalf was the only U.S. wrestler in the field this year. He opened with a 10-0 technical fall over Russian Aleksandr Kozlov. In the second round, he was defeated by Soslan Ramonov of Russia in 5:10.
Ramonov won his next match and reached the semifinals, where he was defeated by 2013 Russian World Team member Magomed Kurbanaliev in overtime at 9:20. Metcalf was not eligible for the repechage, because only those who lose to finalists are able to wrestleback. Ramonov placed third, the second straight year he finished with a bronze medal at this event.
Metcalf competed in the 2010 and 2013 World Championships for the United States, Metcalf has had success in this important tournament in recent seasons, placing second in his weight in 2013 and fifth in 2011
Metcalf was a two-time NCAA champion and three-time finalist for Iowa, and currently trains there full-time. He is a native of Davison, Mich.
