HAVANA, Cuba – Zach Rey (Bethlehem, Pa./Lehigh Valley AC) won a gold medal at 125 kg/275 lbs., one of four U.S. medalists on the final day of the Cerro Pelado International on Saturday.
Rey, a past NCAA champion from Lehigh, defeated U.S. teammate Matt Meuleners (Lincoln, Neb./Titan Mercury WC) in the championship finals. Meuleners was a two-time NCAA Div. II national champion from Northern State.
Joining Rey and Meuleners as medalists from Team USA were silver medalist Moza Fay (Colorado Springs, Colo./Army WCAP) and bronze medalist Jason Welch (Evanston, Ill./Wrestling Prep/Chicago RTC) both competing at the same weight class.
Fay, the former UNI star, and Welch, who starred at Northwestern, both lost to the same wrestler, Cuba’s four-time World medalist Geandry Garzon. Welch lost to Garzon in the semifinals, while Fay fell to Garzon in the finals. Both Fay and Welch had 2-1 records for the day.
2012 Olympic bronze medalist Coleman Scott (Stillwater, Okla./Titan Mercury WC/Cowboy RTC) won his first match at 61 kg/134 lbs. over a Cuban opponent, but dropped an injury default against a German opponent in the second round.
Combined with Friday’s action, the USA won eight medals at the Cerro Pelado in men’s freestyle, with golds from Rey and Kyle Dake (Ithaca, N.Y./Titan Mercury WC/Finger Lakes WC) at 74 kg/163 lbs.
Three members of the U.S. delegation competed in FILA Junior exhibition bouts on Thursday. Going 2-0 in the FILA Junior matches were 2013 Junior World champion Kyle Snyder (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids/OTC) at 97 kg/213 lbs. and Aaron Pico (Whittier, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 65 kg/143 lbs.
