Metcalf dominates Gomez late to earn FPL 3 victory

In vintage Brent Metcalf fashion, the three-time U.S. World Team member dominated the latter stages of the FPL 3 main event at 150 pounds against 2011 World Silver medalist Franklin Gomez, scoring three, third period takedowns to earn the 9-2 victory.
Gomez opened up an early 2-0 lead on Metcalf, converting on a single leg just over a minute into the bout. Metcalf would quickly retaliate, scoring with a left-handed high crotch, to tie the bout 2-2 heading into the second period.
Metcalf scored the only point of the second period, earning a push out one minute in.
The third period was all Metcalf. The bruiser tallied three final period takedowns to cap off the first-ever meeting between the two world-class foes.
“You have got to be ready for a guy who has great tricks,” Metcalf said. “It’s about having less passion to lose.”
The co-main event featured a rematch of the 2014 Bill Farrell International semifinals with Deron Winn squaring off against Jon Reader.
Reader avenged the 8-4 loss to Winn from last month, earning a 6-2 victory over Winn at FPL 3.
Winn scored the opening takedown of the match, but Reader would tack on three takedowns of his own before the clock hit zero in the 190-pound showdown.
Fifth place finisher at the World Championships in 2013, Angel Escobedo dominated Conor Beebee 12-0 en route to victory at 135 pounds at FPL 3. Escobedo tallied six takedowns in the bout.
2010 NCAA Champion Max Askren topped three-time NCAA All-American Jordan Blanton in impressive fashion 11-2 at 190 pounds.
Justin Pearch earned a 6-0 victory over Andre Hernandez in the lone 165-pound match on the evening.
The Flo Premier League will continue its inaugural season on Jan. 25 in Wisconsin pitting Two-Time NCAA Champion and 2008 Olympian Ben Askren against one of the top current competitors at 86 kg for the U.S. Clayton Foster.
