Hornbuckle and Peters win golds, as USA wins four freestyle medals on Thursday at Veterans Worlds

BELGRADE, Serbia –Two Americans competing in Division G, Jack Hornbuckle of Poteau, Okla. at 63 kg and Kenneth Peters of Elmhurst, Ill. at 76 kg, claimed gold medals in freestyle on Thursday at the Veterans World Championships.


Hornbuckle was in a two-athlete weight class, and pinned Imre Baumann of Hungary in the first period in the championship finals.


Peters went 2-1 in a four-athlete roundrobin, defeating Mohammadhassan Behoud of Iran and Viktor Tonkikh of Russia, but losing to Nurlan Orzalinov of Kazakhstan. No athlete went undefeated in the round robin. Peters and Behoud both went 2-1, and Peters won the tie-breaker with seven classification points, to Behoud’s six.


Returning Veterans World champion Jason Goldman of Endicott, N.Y. won a silver medal at 58 kg in Division A with a 1-1 record. He opened with a victory in the semifinals over Hidemasa Okada of Japan, 6-4, then was defeated in the finals by Abdolreza Rastekar of Iran, 1-8.


Winning a bronze medal with a strong 3-1 record at 97 kg in Division A was Octavius Bellamy of Westchester, Ill. Bellamy opened with wins over Hamza Ergut of Turkey and Igor Nencioni of Italy. He was defeated in the semifinals by Gamet Ostaev of Russia, but bounced back to defeat Mohammad Shababpour of Iran, 10-7 in the bronze-medal round.


In the freestyle tournament, which was completed after three day, the USA won 18 total medals at the Veterans Worlds, including five golds, five silvers and eight bronzes. The Greco-Roman division is set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
