Eight wrestlers repeat as champions at FTA Northwest Bigfoot Battle in Spokane, Wash. last week

Eight athletes were able to repeat as champions at the Northwest Bigfoot Battle in Spokane, Wash. as USA Wrestling kicked off the Folkstyle Tour of America series for 2016-17. This is the first of a popular six-event series for the new season.

Four of the repeat champions won their titles in the Novice division, while the other four won their titles in the Middle School division.

Repeat champion Mack Mauger of the Delchev Trained Academy won the 60-pound Novice title, defeating Jordan McKamey of the Lewiston Wrestling Club by fall in 2:28.

Cody Miller of Extreme Takedown won for the second year in a row, taking the 75-pound Novice title, defeating Cooper Sanders of the Top of Utah Wrestling Club by decision, 7-0. Miller also won the Outstanding Wrestler award.

Another back-to-back champion, Daschle Lamer of the Metro Mat Club Vipers, won the 85-pound Novice title, defeating Westin Triplett of Extreme Takedown by decision, 8-2.

For a second consecutive year, Sawyer Troupe of the Big Game Wrestling Club was champion, taking the 105-pound Novice title by defeating Caden Wilson of the Tri Cities Wrestling Club by fall in 1:37.

Another repeat champion was Muro Michel of the Salem Elite Mat Club, who won the 77-pound Middle School title, defeating Joel Godina of Toppenish Bad Boy Wrestling by fall in 0:27.

Taking the Middle School title at 91 pounds this year was Chance Lamer of the Metro Mat Club Vipers, defeating Dominic Hargrove of SOT Academy by major decision, 10-0. Last year, Lamer was the Middle School champion at 77 pounds. Lamer also won the Outstanding Wrestler award.

Abel Nava of Victory Wrestling – Central WA captured back-to-back titles, winning in both 2015 and 2016. This year, Nava took home the 98-pound Middle School title, defeating Maximus Zamora of the Moses Lake Wrestling Club by decision, 4-2.

The eighth repeat champion was Gilbert Marquez of the Garage Boyz, who won the 160-pound Middle School title, defeating Caleb Shockey of Orange Crush by fall in 1:31.

There were a few upsets in the Northwest Bigfoot Battle. One notable upset was in the 75-pound Intermediate division, where Jeremy Alo-Perry defeated the reigning champion, Ladd Holman, by major decision, 12-4.

It was an outstanding day of wrestling in these five youth divisions, as a total of 951 athletes competed. Included were 277 Middle School athletes, 193 Novice athletes, 175 Intermediate athletes, 79 Bantam athletes, 37 Fly athletes and 190 True Beginner athletes.
