NORMAN – Despite three wins to end the match, the No. 17 Sooners fell to No. 11 Michigan, 27-15, in the home opener Friday night in McCasland Field House.
The Sooners picked up wins at 184 pounds, 197 pounds and heavyweight, including two wins by fall by junior Andrew Dixon (184 pounds) and redshirt senior Ross Larson (285 pounds).
“I think it’s nice for them to get wins. I think, obviously, Ross did his part, and I think that Andrew did his part and Brad (Johnson) sucked it up,” Rosselli said. “So, it was nice to see a few wins. Overall, certain people just don’t compete—they’re not competing hard enough. I can’t say it enough. There’s a level of competition that we’re not aware of just yet. Learning how to compete is our No. 1 priority, and wrestling and wrestling hard for seven minutes. We didn’t do that tonight.”
Dixon got the first win of the night for the Sooners at 184 pounds with a win by fall over Ernest Battaglia in 4:05. Dixon struck first with an early takedown but Battaglia countered with a reversal. Dixon escaped to end the first period with a 3-2 lead. After starting the second period on top, Dixon added a 2-point nearfall to hold a 5-2 advantage at the time of the fall.
At 197 pounds, redshirt senior Brad Johnson, ranked No. 19 by InterMat, picked up a 4-2 decision over Michigan’s Jackson Striggow in sudden victory one. Johnson escaped in the second period for the first points of the bout, taking a 1-0 lead into the final frame. Each wrestler recorded a takedown in the third period and were locked at 4-4 at the end of regulation, but Johnson registered a takedown with four seconds left in overtime for the win.
No. 12 Larson capped off the match with a win by fall in 36 seconds over Kostya Golobokov. The redshirt senior got off to a quick start with a takedown at the 20-second mark and led 2-0 at the time of the pin.
After an exciting first period at 125 pounds that found freshman Dalton Duffield and No. 18 Austin Assad in a 4-4 lock, Assad started on top and registered a win by fall in 4:25.
At 133, No. 10 Stevan Micic downed junior Trae Blackwell by 11-3 major decision, and Mike Longo dropped a 12-4 major decision to Sal Profaci at 141 pounds. Zac Hall downed No. 12 Davion Jeffries, 9-3 at 149 pounds, and No. 12 DaWaylon Barnes lost to No. 5 Brian Murphy, 11-4, at 157 pounds.
No. 10 Clark Glass dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 7 Logan Massa at 165 pounds, and at 174 pounds, Myles Amine recorded an 11-2 major decision over Hayden Hansen.
With the loss, the Sooners fall to 0-1 on the season. OU returns to the mat Sunday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. for a Big-12 matchup with North Dakota State in McCasland Field House.
