Beijing Olympic medalists Baroev, Rahimov, Mambetov stripped of medals for doping from retests

The International Olympic Committee has announced 16 more athletes who have positive doping tests from the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, after retesting their samples using modern testing procedures.


Three Greco-Roman wrestlers who won medals tested positive and will have their medals stripped from them.


They are:

• Khassan Baroev of Russia, 2008 Olympic silver medalist at 120 kg in Greco-Roman

• Vitaliy Rahimov of Azerbaijan, 2008 Olympic silver medalist at 60 kg in Greco-Roman

• Asset Mambetov of Kazakhstan, 2008 Olympic bronze medalist at 96 kg in Greco-Roman


United World Wrestling has not yet announced how the results will be changed, and who will receive medals as a result of these three athletes losing their medal.


The United States is not in line to receive a medal because of these sanctions.


At 96 kg, Adam Wheeler won a bronze medal and was on the opposite side of the bracket from Mambetov. At 120 kg, Dremiel Byers placed seventh at his weight class and was on the opposite side of the bracket from Baroev. At 60 kg, the USA did not have an entry in Greco-Roman.


At 120 kg, the bronze medalist who could move up from Baroev’s side to a silver medal is Mindaugus Mizgaitis of Lithuania, and the fifth place finisher who could move up from his side to the bronze medal is Yannick Szcepaniak of France.


At 60 kg, the bronze medalist who could move up from Rahimov’s side to a silver medal is Nurbakyt Tengizbayev of Kazakhstan, and the fifth place finisher who could move up from his side to the bronze medal is Jiang Shen of China.


At 96 kg, the fifth place athlete who lost to Mambetov in the bronze-medal bout was Marek Svec of the Czech Republic.


Below is the announcement from the IOC about the three wrestlers and their sanctions.

Khasan BAROEV, 33, of the Russian Federation, competing in the men’s 96-120kg Greco-Roman wrestling event, has been disqualified from the Olympic Games Beijing 2008, in which he ranked 2nd and for which he was awarded a silver medal. Reanalysis of Baroev’s samples from Beijing 2008 resulted in a positive test for the prohibited substance dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (turinabol).

The IOC Disciplinary Commission, composed for this case of Denis Oswald (Chairman), Gunilla Lindberg and Ugur Erdener, decided the following:

I. The Athlete, Khasan BAROEV:

i. is found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation pursuant to the IOC Anti-Doping Rules applicable to the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing in 2008 (presence and/or use of a Prohibited Substance or its Metabolites or Markers in an athlete’s bodily specimen),

ii. is disqualified from the men’s 96-120kg Greco-Roman wrestling event in which he participated upon the occasion of the Olympic Games Beijing 2008,

iii. has the medal, the medallist pin and the diploma obtained in the men’s 96-120kg Greco-Roman wrestling event withdrawn and is ordered to return the same.

II. The UWW is requested to modify the results of the above-mentioned event accordingly and to consider any further action within its own competence.

III. The Russian Olympic Committee shall ensure full implementation of this decision.

IV. The Russian Olympic Committee shall notably secure the return to the IOC, as soon as possible, of the medal, the medallist pin and the diploma awarded in connection with the men’s 96-120kg Greco-Roman wrestling event to the Athlete.

V. This decision enters into force immediately.

Asset MAMBETOV, 34, of Kazakhstan, competing in the men’s 84-96kg Greco-Roman wrestling event, has been disqualified from the Olympic Games Beijing 2008, in which he ranked 3rd and for which he was awarded a bronze medal. Reanalysis of Mambetov’s samples from Beijing 2008 resulted in a positive test for the prohibited substance stanozolol.

The IOC Disciplinary Commission, composed for this case of Denis Oswald (Chairman), Gunilla Lindberg and Ugur Erdener, decided the following:

I. The Athlete, Asset MAMBETOV:

i. is found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation pursuant to the IOC Anti-Doping Rules applicable to the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing in 2008 (presence and/or use of a Prohibited Substance or its Metabolites or Markers in an athlete’s bodily specimen),

ii. is disqualified from the men’s 84-96kg Greco-Roman wrestling event in which he participated upon the occasion of the Olympic Games Beijing 2008,

iii. has the medal, the medallist pin and the diploma obtained in the men’s 84-96kg Greco-Roman wrestling event withdrawn and is ordered to return the same.

II. The UWW is requested to modify the results of the above-mentioned event accordingly and to consider any further action within its own competence.

III. The National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan shall ensure full implementation of this decision.

IV. The National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan shall notably secure the return to the IOC, as soon as possible, of the medal, the medallist pin and the diploma awarded in connection with the men’s 84-96kg Greco-Roman wrestling event.

V. This decision enters into force immediately.

Vitaliy RAHIMOV, 32, of Azerbaijan, competing in the men’s 55-60kg Greco-Roman wrestling event, has been disqualified from the Olympic Games Beijing 2008, in which he ranked 2nd and for which he was awarded a silver medal. Reanalysis of Rahimov’s samples from Beijing 2008 resulted in a positive test for the prohibited substance dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (turinabol).

The IOC Disciplinary Commission, composed for this case of Denis Oswald (Chairman), Gunilla Lindberg and Ugur Erdener, decided the following:

I. The Athlete, Vitaliy RAHIMOV:

ii. is disqualified from the men’s 55-60kg Greco-Roman wrestling in which he participated upon the occasion of the Olympic Games Beijing 2008,

iii. has the medal, the medallist pin and the diploma obtained in the men’s 55-60kg Greco-Roman wrestling withdrawn and is ordered to return the same.

II. The UWW is requested to modify the results of the above-mentioned event accordingly and to consider any further action within its own competence.

III. The National Olympic Committee of the Azerbaijani Republic shall ensure full implementation of this decision.

IV. The National Olympic Committee of the Azerbaijani Republic shall notably secure the return to the IOC, as soon as possible, of the medal, the medallist pin and the diploma awarded in connection with the men’s 55-60kg Greco-Roman wrestling to the Athlete.

V. This decision enters into force immediately.
