YORK, Pa. – Host Pennsylvania led most of the finals dual meet, but a strong finish by defending champion Illinois led to a tight 40-34 victory at the Cadet National Duals in freestyle on Saturday.
Pennsylvania took a 34-22 lead after a 13-0 technical fall win by Keystone state star Mike Lewis over Donnell Washington at 132 pounds with just two bouts to go, but it did not prove to be enough.
Back-to-back technical falls by Illinois from Will Lewan at 138 pounds and Baylor Fernandes at 145 pounds gave them the final eight points for the victory.
Lewan scored a quick takedown and four ankle laces for a first-period 10-0 win over Carnell Andrews, giving Illinois a 36-34 lead going into the final match.
Fernandes opened the final match with a four point move, then methodically added a takedown, a turn and another takedown for his 10-0 technical fall over Alec Sampson, and the Illinois team rushed onto to mat to celebrate the comeback team victoru
Pennsylvania led from the start, winning three of the first four matches for a 12-5 lead. Right off the bat, Edmond Ruth scored three takedowns and two turns for a powerful 10-0 technical fall over Danny Braunagel at 152 pounds. Josh Stillings followed with a 10-6 decision over Peter Ferraro at 160 pounds. After an Illinois win by Zach Braunagel at 170 pounds, Benjamin Root extended the Pennsylvania lead, scoring a four-point hip-toss and a four-point cutback counter and completed a 13-2 technical fall over Jacob Kaminski at 182 pounds.
Pennsylvania held onto that lead for the first 10 matches. A three-match Illinois winning streak brought the match to a 24-24 tie after Justin Cardani stopped Ed Scott, 12-6 at 100 pounds. Technical falls in the two previous bouts helped close the gap. Christian Goin had a big four-point move early on, and kept up his offense to score a 12-2 technical fall over Lincoln Heck at 94 pounds. Next at 100 pounds, Josh Ogansanya scored a takedown and four turns for a quick 10-0 technical fall over Dillon Murphy.
J J Wilson would not let Illinois take the lead, cradling up Jacob Lindsey of Illinois to score a pin in just 1:40 at 113 pounds. Illinois came back with a pair of technical falls by Eddie Bolivar at 120 and Tyler Delaware at 126 to take its first lead at 32-30, heading into the dramatic final three bouts.
Pennsylvania Blue survived a close battle in Gold/Silver Pool A, edging the Minnesota Storm, 37-35 in a rematch of Thursday’s Greco-Roman finals. The match was not decided until the final bout, when Carnell Andrews of Pennsylvania scored a 16-6 technical fall over Brock Luthens at 132 pounds. Pennsylvania won eight matches while nine matches, the difference being Pennsylvania scoring bonus points in five matches, while Minnesota scored bonus points in two matches.
Illinois was consistent in its Gold/Silver Pool B matches, defeating Iowa Gold, 47-32, stopping Washington, 59-20 and getting past New Jersey Red, 41-33.
Taking third place was New Jersey Red, which won seven of the last eight matches to defeat the Minnesota Storm, 44-30. Included in that closing streak for New Jersey was a pin by Mark Montgomery at 106, plus technical falls by Anthony Clark (100), Carmen Ferrante (120), Nick Raimo (126), Pat Glory (132) and Rick Cabanillas (145).
Winning 14 of the 17 bouts of the dual, Iowa Gold finished third with a 60-15 win over Michigan Red. This included 10 straight wins in the middle of the dual meet. There was no seventh place match, as Washington was awarded the victory over California.
