FARGO, N.D. – The 2016 ASICS/Vaughan Cadet and Junior National Championships wrapped up on Saturday afternoon at the Fargodome with 15 wrestlers claiming Junior freestyle crowns.
Oregon superstar Sam Shields-Colbray secured his fifth Fargo title with an electrifying 15-4 technical fall win over 2014 Cadet Triple Crown winner Keegan Moore of Minnesota in the 220-pound finals.
"I just compete the best to my God-given ability. I knew that this was my last year to perform here and every step, no matter what caliber of competition, is going to improve your level,” said Colbray.
Shields-Colbray, one of five Iowa State commits in the Junior freestyle finals, doubled up on Junior titles this week. The only other wrestler to win Junior Nationals in both Greco-Roman and freestyle was three-time Minnesota state champion Griffin Parriott.
Committed to wrestle at Purdue next year, Parriott exploded for a 10-0 technical fall win over California state champion Zander Wick in the 152-pound finals.
"I've got the best training partners like Mitch McKee, Jake Allar and Owen Webster. We all train together and we go hard. Our coaches are on us about acting like we're the baddest dudes out there and we're the toughest. If you believe that, that's what's going to show on the mat,” said Parriott.
Two-time Ohio state champion Ben Darmstadt continued to shoot up the high school ranks with a blistering performance at 195 pounds over the last three days. He defeated John Borst of Virginia in the championship match, 10-0.
On his road to the title, Darmstadt picked up four technical falls and two pins without surrendering a single point. Darmstadt was named Outstanding Wrestler of the Junior freestyle tournament and has committed to wrestle in college at Cornell.
"I've always come up short so I've always wanted to get that stop sign instead of one of those little coasters,” Darmstadt said. “After last year, I knew that I needed to work on my shot...so all of this year and all of this summer, I have been working on setting up my shots, getting closer and good finishes."
Two-time Michigan state champion Ian Parker pulled the upset of the finals by taking out four-time Fargo champion Taylor LaMont of Utah in the 132-pound finals, 3-2. Parker was a Cadet freestyle champion in 2013 and will wrestle at Iowa State next year.
"I knew that he was the best in the country and best in the world, but I know I'm right there with those guys. I knew I could compete with him. I lost a close match to him earlier this summer so I knew I was right there. It was an amazing feeling. It was my first time in the finals at Fargo and it's amazing beating a world-class guy like that,” said Parker.
2015 Cadet World bronze medalist Owen Webster dominated in the 182-pound finals with a 10-0 technical fall over Kevin Parker of New York. Webster, who won a Cadet Greco-Roman title in 2014, is a Minnesota state champion and will wrestle at the next level for his home state Gophers.
Two-time Cadet World Team member Gavin Teasdale of Pennsylvania won a back and forth bout against two-time Junior Greco-Roman champion Dalton Duffield of Oklahoma in the 120-pound finals, 8-6. Teasdale is a two-time Pennsylvania state champion entering his junior campaign and has already committed to wrestle at Iowa in college.
Colorado’s Malik Heinselman won his fourth Fargo title and first in the Junior division after topping familiar foe Brendon Garcia of Colorado, 15-5, in the 100-pound finals. Heinselman is a two-time Cadet World Team member and will wrestle at the UWW Cadet World Championships in freestyle this September.
Indiana state champion Nick Lee executed to perfection late against two-time Michigan state champion Kanen Storr to win the 138-pound bracket in the waning moments of the finals, 11-10. Lee was a Cadet freestyle champion in 2014 and has committed to wrestle at Penn State.
Illinois product Austin Gomez tacked on Junior freestyle champion to his already impressive wrestling resume that includes Cadet Greco-Roman and freestyle champion and Cadet World Team member with an impressive pin over Indiana’s Paul Konrath in the 126-pound finals. Gomez has committed to compete in college at Iowa State.
At heavyweight, Iowa high school state champion Gannon Gremmel took out Anthony Cassioppi of Illinois, 14-4, to give the latest class of Iowa State Cyclone commits four Junior freestyle titles. Gremmel also won a Cadet freestyle title two years ago.
The only wrestler to defend his Junior freestyle title from 2015 was Arizona’s Jason Holmes at 106 pounds. Holmes, a 2014 Cadet World Team member, stopped Rayvon Foley of Michigan in the finals, 7-2.
At 145 pounds, 2015 Cadet champion in both styles Anthony Artalona of Florida edged 2015 Cadet World champion Jarod Verkleeren of Pennsylvania in the finals, 2-1. All three points in the bout came by way of the shot clock. Artalona finished in third place in the Junior Greco-Roman competition earlier this week and is a two-time Florida state champion.
Two-time Cadet Nationals champion Nic Aguilar of California (113), 2014 Cadet Greco-Roman champion Jake Allar of Minnesota (160) and Missouri state champion and Missouri commit Canten Marriot (170) round out the list of Junior freestyle champions.
Pennsylvania took home the state’s first Junior Nationals freestyle title since 2009. The Keystone State hammers accumulated 58 team points, finishing six points ahead of runner-up Minnesota. Illinois, Michigan and Iowa round out the top five Junior teams.
