Green, Taylor win freestyle gold medals at Spanish Grand Prix

MADRID, Spain – Claiming men’s freestyle gold medals at the Grand Prix of Spain on Saturday were U.S. stars James Green (Lincoln, Neb./Titan Mercury WC) at 70 kg/154 lbs. and David Taylor (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) at 86 kg/189 lbs.
Green, a 2015 World bronze medalist, won three matches on the way to his title, edging Ildus Giniiatullin of Russia in the finals, 4-3. Giniiatullin was third at the 2016 Russian Nationals, and has won medals at three international events in the past.
He opened with a 7-5 win over Kubilay Cakici of Germany, 7-5, and scored a 10-0 technical fall over Hamid Vafei of Iran in the semifinals.
Green has won three medals in three events this summer, getting a gold with a 4-0 record at the World Cup and a bronze at the Ziolkowski Memorial in Poland.
Taylor won four times, including wins over two athletes who have qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games. He opened with a 6-2 win over Vahid Shahmohammadizad of Iran, 6-2, then defeated American Junior World Team member Zahid Valencia, 10-3.
In the semifinals, he defeated Mongolian Olympian Orgodol Uitumen, 14-7, then stopped Hungarian Olympian Istvan Vereb in the finals, 8-6.
Valencia (Bellflower, Calif./Sunkist Kids) was among three U.S. Junior World Team members who competed on Saturday, joined by Daton Fix (Sand Springs, Okla./Team BIG) at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. and Seth Gross (Rosemount, Minn./Jackrabbit WC) at 61 kg/134 lbs. Fix placed eighth and Valencia was ninth in their weights.
The Greco-Roman competition, which featured three Americans, is still going on. On Sunday, a large U.S. women’s contingent, including four Olympians, will compete. Updates will be posted when available.
