LIMA, Peru – Five U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers won gold medals on the final day of the Pan American Cadet Championships on Sunday.
Capturing gold medals were Colin Valdiviez of Lee’s Summit, Mo. at 54 kg/119 lbs., Tyler Dow of Stoughton, Wis. at 69 kg/152 lbs., Jake Hendricks of New Ringgold, Pa. at 76 kg/167.5 lbs., Michael Beard of Pottstown, Pa. at 85 kg/187.5 lbs. and Noah Adams of Coal City, W.Va. at 100 kg/220 lbs. All five U.S. wrestlers had dominant performances on the way to their titles.
Valdiviez had the closest final, scoring a 4-4 criteria win over Joshua Soto Cardenas of Venezuela in the gold-medal match. He was dominant in the preliminaries, scoring two pins and a technical fall.
Dow won four matches handily, with three technical falls in the preliminaries, followed by a pin over Sergio Godoy Vite of Ecuador in the finals.
Hendricks and Beard went 3-0 on the way to their titles, winning every single match by technical fall. Hendricks beat Thales Alves of Brazil in the finals in a 10-0 technical fall. Beard put away Tejvir Boal of Canada by a 10-0 technical fall in his finals.
Adams had a five-athlete round-robin and dominated all four of his bouts. He defeated eventual runner-up Victor Mancheno Jumbo of Ecuador in a 13-0 technical fall in the first round. Adams received the Golden Boot award as the Outstanding Wrestler of the Cadet Pan American Championships in freestyle.
Two USA athletes were silver medalists, Cevion Severado of St. Peters, Mo. at 46 kg/101.5 lbs. and Dylan D’Emilio of Curtice, Ohio at 50 kg/110 lbs. Severado went 3-1 in a five-athlete roundrobin, with technical falls in all three of his wins. D’Emilio won his first two matches with a pin and a technical fall, before losing in the finals to Roberto Alejandro Blanco of Mexico, 9-2.
Bronze medals went to Andrew Chambal of Millington, Mich. at 42 kg/92.5 lbs. and Calvin Germinaro of Ramsey, Minn. at 63 kg /138.75 lbs.
With nine medalists, including five golds, two silvers and two bronze medals, the USA won the team title handily.
All 10 of the men competitors from the United States competed in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. Two of the American were double champions, winners of both the freestyle and Greco-Roman tournaments. The double champions were Colin Valdiviez at 54 kg and Noah Adams at 100 kg.
Six other wrestlers were able to win medals in both styles: Chambral, Severado, D’Emilio, Germinaro, Hendricks and Beard.
It was a great weekend for the United States, which won the team title in all three styles during the weekend. It also received a trophy on Sunday as the overall champions, combining the three Olympic styles.
Coaching the men wrestlers were two-time Olympian and Maryland head coach Kerry McCoy, and veteran Greco-Roman coach Dale Oliver. The women’s team was coached by Assistant National Coach Emma Randall, World medalist Stephanie Murata and Life University women’s coach Dave Mathews. Mel Dow served as team leader and also helped as a coach.
For three days straight, the United States demonstrated the developmental program is alive and well. In an environment that was a challenge, the USA Cadets in all three styles performed when it counted. The most impressive part about these 20 athletes, Coaches Murata, Randall, Mathews, Oliver, McCoy and medical staff Jeff Jahnel was how they were focused and worked as Team USA. This is yet another example that USA Wrestling is providing the plan to build future champions,” said Dow.
The men’s team will be travelling back to the USA on July 4, with a truly patriotic approach.
“This team is excited to be traveling back to the United States on the 4th of July, giving up parades and fireworks, knowing theirs were on the mat over the last four days. The airport will be fun with gold medals around their necks and trophies in hand. I am quite sure it will be a holiday to remember,” said Dow.
