USA Wrestling has set up a petition process for athletes who would like to compete in the 2016 Beach World Championships, set for Fazana, Croatia, June 4-5.
This year, the World Championships will be held just two weeks after the U.S. Beach National Championships in Carolina Beach, N.C. on May 21. This does not give sufficient time for USA Wrestling to use the Beach Nationals as a qualifier and organize a delegation to compete at the Beach Worlds.
With that as the case, USA Wrestling will conduct a petition process for those who would like to compete in the Beach World Championships.
The Beach World Championships is a self-funded tour, in which athletes must cover the cost of travel, room and board and competition fees.
The first opportunity to participate will go to the 2015 U.S. Beach National Senior champions and runners-up, who competed last year in Carolina Beach, N.C. These athletes did not get an opportunity to attend the Beach Worlds because of scheduling, and will have first chance to sign up for the event.
In addition to the 2015 Beach National finalists, any athlete who has competed in Beach wrestling at the national and international level can apply for a spot on the team. The weight classes for Men are 70 kg, 80 kg, 90 kg and Unlimited (over 90kg). The weight classes for women are 60 kg, 70 kg and Unlimited (Over 70 kg). The USA can enter up to three athletes in each weight class.
USA Wrestling requires that any of the athletes who petition for the 2016 Beach World Championships also must compete at the 2016 U.S. Beach National Championships in Carolina Beach, N.C. on May 21. However, those who wish to attend the Worlds and can’t compete in Carolina Beach on May 21 can pay a $75 waiver fee to the event and compete only at the Beach Worlds in Croatia.
USA Wrestling must receive petitions for the 2016 U.S. Beach World Team by April 25. Athletes will be immediately notified if their petition is accepted. Please send your petition, with information on your past Beach Wrestling achievements, to Gary Abbott at gabbott@usawrestling.org
Complete payment for the tournament costs must be made to USA Wrestling by May 2, as the final entry for the tournament must be submitted to the Croatian Federation later that week.
The hosts require that each participant spend three nights in the host hotel in order to enter the tournament. The room and board cost for each competitor is $110 per night, Athletes will have to pay the Beach Nationals waiver fee in advance if they are not going to Carolina Beach.
Here are the fees that would be due on May 2:
• Athlete who will also wrestle in Carolina Beach - $330
• Athlete who will pay the waiver fee for Carolina Beach - $405
All competitors must have a current 2016 UWW license. For those without a current license, the cost will be $110 and must be paid in cash at the event.
Please note that if more than three U.S. athletes attend the Beach World Championships , USA Wrestling will be required to send an official. A surcharge to cover that cost will also be split between the athletes on the tour.
Participants will also need to book their flights themselves and provide their itinerary to USA Wrestling by a specific date. The arrival airport will be Pula airport in Pula, Croatia. Participants who arrive in Venice, Zagreb or Trieste airports can be transported to Fazana by paying an additional transfer fee to the event organizers.
