by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
Alexys Zepeda (Gervais, Ore./Team Oregon) has been selected as TheMat.com Co-Athlete of the Week on July 24, 2018.
Earlier this week, USA Wrestling announced that Junior Triple Crown winner Anthony Cassioppi of Illinois was the other Co-Athlete of the Week.
Zepeda put together an impressive Fargo run, winning the Cadet and Junior Women’s Freestyle brackets last week in dominating fashion.
In the Cadet division at 122 pounds, she ended all five of her matches early with four technical falls and one pin.
Zepeda collected a 10-0 tech fall in 46 seconds in the finals of Nanea Estrella of Hawaii.
Just days later, the Oregon native ran through a gauntlet of a bracket, which included a Senior U.S. Open All-American, a 2017 Junior World Team member and a multiple-time age-group World Team member.
In the quarterfinals, Zepeda knocked off Ainslie Lane of Oklahoma, who took fifth at the USMC Senior U.S. Open and finished fourth at the Senior World Team Trials Challenge Tournament, with an 11-0 tech fall.
One round later, the Cadet Fargo champ defeated 2017 Junior World Team member and rising star Cameron Guerin of Washington with a 10-0 shutout.
Waiting for Zepeda in the 122-pound finals was 2017 Cadet World Team member and 2018 Junior World Team member Alisha Howk of Wisconsin, who is ranked No.1 in the nation at 117 pounds.
Zepeda controlled Howk, scoring four times for an 8-0 win and her second Fargo title of the week.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
