FORT BLISS, Texas – It has been over two years since the U.S. military branches got together for the regular tradition of the Armed Forces Wrestling Championships, and Army picked up right where it left off, sweeping Greco-Roman dual meets over Marines, Air Force and Navy on Saturday.

The championship dual meet turned out to be the first dual of the day between Army and Marines. It was a 31-11 Army victory, but several matches were highly competitive, particularly for Olympians SGT Alejandro Sancho at 72 kg and SPC Kamal Bey at 87 kg.

Both Sancho and Bey had to overcome second-period deficits. Sancho edged past Pan American champion Capt Jamel Johnson, 6-5, while Bey pulled a rabbit out of his hat in the final seconds against Capt Terrence Zaleski.

Army’s SGT Dalton Roberts (60 kg), SSG Xavier Johnson (63 kg), SGT Ellis Coleman (67 kg), SGT Justus Scott (77 kg), SGT Britton Holmes (82 kg) and 1LT Michial Foy (97 kg) all took down Marines’ opponents by technical fall.

Notching wins for the Marines were SSgt Xavier Medina at 55 kg and Capt Courtney Freeman at 130 kg. Medina won a hard-fought bout over SGT William Sullivan, 6-3. Freeman won by injury default against SFC Lucas Sheridan.

Each winner in the Army-Marines dual went on to win individual gold medals awarded to the top wrestler in each weight class.

Army completed the championship sweep with a 42-1 win over Navy and a 38-6 win over Air Force. Marines finished in second place with a 2-1 record. Air Force took third place over Navy courtesy of a 22-19 win in round one.

The Armed Forces Championships resume at 10 a.m. (CT) on Sunday with the men’s freestyle and women’s freestyle tournaments.
