Nathan Tomasello (Parma, Ohio/Ohio State University) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on January 16, 2018.

In his second outing of the college season, the Ohio State senior put together a dominant 18-3 win over returning NCAA finalist and current No. 4 Ethan Lizak of Minnesota. Tomasello’s win helped the No. 2 Ohio State squad to a 31-7 dual-meet victory over No. 14 Minnesota in Columbus, Ohio, last Friday. The Buckeyes are now 9-0 in dual meet action this season.

Currently the top-ranked wrestler in the NCAA at 125 pounds, Tomasello is a past NCAA champion, three-time All-American and three-time Big Ten champion for the Buckeyes. He won the NCAA Championships in 2015 as a freshman and followed with third-place finishes at the event the past two seasons. Tomasello now holds a 2-0 record this season with both wins coming by technical fall.

Tomasello has been a longtime competitor on the freestyle circuit, with his first big senior-level season coming in 2017. Last year, Tomasello finished in third place at the U.S. World Team Trials and U.S. Open at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. Internationally, he picked up a silver medal at the highly-competitive Alexander Medved International and earned gold at the Ion Corneanu International.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.

To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete’s name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Manager of Communications Richard Immel at rimmel@usawrestling.org.
