Anthony Cassar (Rocky Hill, N.J./Penn State) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on February 6, 2018.
The much-anticipated clash between No. 1 Penn State and No. 2 Ohio State lived up to the hype, in large part to the role Cassar played in the 197-pound bout. The Nittany Lion sophomore wrestled near-perfection to upset top-ranked and previously undefeated Buckeye Kollin Moore, 6-3.
After falling behind 15-5 at intermission, Penn State charged back to take a 16-15 lead heading into the 197-pound contest. The decision win by Cassar was the catalyst that ultimately pushed Penn State over the top for a 19-18 dual meet victory.
Cassar was unranked entering last Saturday's dual due to splitting starting time with teammate Shakur Rasheed, who was ranked No. 7 nationally at the time by FloWrestling. The win pushed Cassar's season record to 16-2. It has yet to be determined who Penn State will start at 197 pounds for the postseason.
A string of injuries has kept Cassar from seeing much mat time since his arrival at Penn State three years ago. He was a talented recruit coming out of high school as a New Jersey state champion, going undefeated during his senior year at Montgomery High School.
In 2015, Cassar was a member of the U.S. Junior World Team that competed in Salvador, Brazil. He finished in eighth place at the Junior World Championships at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. The same year, Cassar won both the UWW Junior World Team Trials and UWW Junior Nationals.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Manager of Communications Richard Immel at rimmel@usawrestling.org.
