George Porter (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./U.S. Veteran’s World Team) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on October 18, 2017.
Porter was among the top international performers at the 2017 Veteran’s World Championships held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria last week. The American standout collected his second-straight World gold medal in men’s freestyle at the event, and tacked on a World bronze medal on the Greco-Roman side.
Competing in Division C at 130 kg, Porter tallied a 4-1 record across both international styles at the Veteran’s Worlds. He began with a 1-1 outing on the Greco-Roman side, with a 52-second pin capping off his bronze-medal match. Porter was perfect in freestyle, collecting three victories by scores of 10-0, 10-0 and 12-4, to grab the gold.
Porter won the men’s freestyle Veteran’s World Championships held in Walbrzych, Poland, last year in the same weight class and division. He was a men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman champion at the 2017 U.S. Master’s National Championships held in Las Vegas, Nev.
On the Senior level, Porter qualified to compete at the 2003 U.S. World Team Trials and was an eighth-place finisher at the 2002 U.S. Open.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the Senior level.
