Deanna Betterman (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on May 16, 2017.
In keeping with the spirit of Mother’s Day, USA Wrestling has elected to award Betterman Athlete of the Week honors because of her excellence on the mat as a competitor while also raising two children, Mason and Madison, on top of her contributions to wrestling on the coaching and administrative levels.
Competing at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. this season, Betterman finished in fourth place at the U.S. Senior Nationals and in sixth place at the U.S. World Team Trials.
Throughout her career, Betterman has made the U.S. National Team three times, finished fifth in the World Championships twice and was a U.S. Open champion. She has won gold medals at many prestigious international events including the Pan American Championships, New York AC International and Dave Schultz Memorial International.
Betterman serves as the Women’s Director for Colorado USA Wrestling and helps coach at James Irwin Central High School.
USA Wrestling would like to give special recognition and thanks to all the wonderful wrestling mothers out there who are actively competing, have competed or are supporting our athletes in one form or another across the nation.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the Senior level.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete’s name, wrestling program and weekly and career accomplishments to Richard Immel at rimmel@usawrestling.org.
