Jordan Decatur (Akron, Ohio/Seasons) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on June 6, 2017.

It was a spectacular weekend for the Ohio sensation at the UWW Cadet Nationals held at the Louis and Freda Stile Field House on the campus of the University of Akron. Decatur dominated the 58 kg/127 lbs. men’s freestyle bracket to solidify his place on the U.S. Cadet World Team.

Throughout the competition, Decatur won seven matches all in spectacular fashion. On the first day of competition, Decatur won five bouts by technical fall to qualify for the best two-of-three championship series against Minnesota’s Carson Manville.

His dominance continued in the finals as he topped Manville two matches to none. The first match of the championship series ended via technical fall, 12-2. Decatur capped off his tournament with a pin over Manville at the 3:40 mark in match two.

Over his first six matches of the competition, Decatur put up a whopping 68 points to his opponents combined six points. He was leading Manville 10-4 in the second match of the championship series, bumping his total point count over seven matches to 78 before securing the winning pin.

The win awarded Decatur a trip to the UWW Cadet World Championships to be held in Athens, Greece, this September. It will be the first time Decatur has competed at a World Championships event.

In his two previous trips to the UWW Cadet Nationals Decatur posted finishes of second and fourth in the men’s freestyle division. In addition, Decatur has won the USA Wrestling Cadet Nationals in men’s freestyle the past two summers out in Fargo, N.D.

Decatur won an Ohio Division II state championship for Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy as a sophomore this past season. He boasts a No. 9 ranking at 126 pounds in the year-end Flowrestling High School Rankings and is currently the second-ranked wrestler on Flowrestling’s Class of 2019 Big Board.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the Senior level.

To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete’s name, wrestling program and weekly and career accomplishments to Richard Immel at rimmel@usawrestling.org.
