Anthony Mantanona (Bermuda Dunes, Calif./Team California) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on April 4, 2017.

Over the weekend, Mantanona set the UNI Dome ablaze with five dominant wins at the USA Wrestling Junior Folkstyle Nationals to claim the 170-pound title.

To reach the championship match, Mantanona tallied four pins over high-caliber opponents, wrestling a combined time of only six minutes and 57 seconds.

On the first day of competition he pinned Minnesota’s Zachary Buseman, Iowa state champion Taylan Entriken, and Utah state champion Brandyn Van Tassell to set up a semifinal match against three-time Iowa state champion and Iowa State commit Marcus Coleman the following morning. Again, Mantanona struck in a big way, pinning Coleman in the first period.

Mantanona went to work on top in the 170-pound finals against Josh Ramirez of Louisiana, securing several sets of nearfall to end the match in the second period by way of technical fall, 17-1.

Following his blistering performance in Cedar Falls, Mantanona was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament in the Junior division.

This year, Mantanona won his first California state championship as a senior for Palm Desert High School. He is a three-time state placer and the California high school record holder for most career pins with 151.

On top of his folkstyle success, Mantanona has posted solid results in the international styles. He won the Junior Greco-Roman Nationals held in Fargo, N.D. last summer, and was runner-up at the UWW Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals in 2015. He also finished in fourth place at the 2014 Cadet Freestyle Nationals.

Mantanona will continue his career at the University of Oklahoma next fall for head coach Lou Rosselli and company.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.

To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete’s name, wrestling program and weekly and career accomplishments to Richard Immel at rimmel@usawrestling.org.
