Chris Brown (Boyds, Md./Team USA) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on Sept. 26, 2016.
On Saturday, Brown picked up gold in the Div. E 85 kg bracket at the Greco-Roman Veterans World Championships in Seinajoki, Finland. He became the first U.S. wrestler to win two Veterans World titles in Greco-Roman.
Brown won four matches in a five-man round robin bracket at the Veterans Worlds to claim his second title at the event. Entering his final match with a 3-0 record, Brown secured a gritty 4-2 win over Marko Sarcanski of Serbia to complete the sweep.
The accomplished American won his first Veterans World championship in 2014 and has served as team captain for the U.S. Veterans squad on multiple occasions. Only seven other U.S. wrestlers have won a gold medal in Greco-Roman at the Veterans Worlds.
Brown has competed at the Veterans Worlds the past four years and has won four total World medals. In addition to his two Greco-Roman titles, Brown won bronze in men’s freestyle in 2014 and bronze in Greco-Roman in 2013.
Brown will have an opportunity to add to his growing list of credentials in two weeks at the men’s freestyle Veterans World Championships in Walbrzych, Poland.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
To nominate a wrestler for USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week please send the athlete’s name, wrestling program and weekly and career accomplishments to Richard Immel at rimmel@usawrestling.org.
