Jake Herbert (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Herbert, a 2009 World silver medalist, outscored 2014 World Team member Ed Ruth by a combined score of 23-5 to sweep the U.S. World Team Trials freestyle finals on Saturday night at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis.

Herbert charged out aggressively to win by a 13-3 technical fall over Ruth before following with a decisive 10-2 win at 86 kg/189 lbs. to sweep their series and make his third World Team.

Herbert previously made World Teams in 2009 and 2010 before making the 2012 Olympic Team. He had been away from competition since the London Olympics before returning to competition this season.

Herbert will represent the U.S. at September’s World Championships in Las Vegas.

Note: To nominate a wrestler for TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week, send the athlete's name, accomplishments for the week and career accomplishments to Craig Sesker at csesker@usawrestling.org
