Zach Epperly (Christiansburg, Va./Virginia Tech University) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Epperly scored a fall over Mark Martin in the second overtime tiebreaker to lift No. 12 Virginia Tech to a 19-18 win over No. 4 Ohio State on Sunday in Blacksburg, Va.
The 174-pound match between the No. 11 Epperly and No. 13 Martin was deadlocked 1-1 heading into the second round of tiebreaker periods.
Epperly rode Martin out in the first half of the tiebreaker before reversing Martin to his back for a fall in the final 30-second period.
Epperly’s fall resulted in six team points that boosted the Hokies to the big win.
