North Central women lead King by 20 points after semifinals at NCWWC Nationals

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – No. 2 ranked North Central pushed six athletes into the finals, and led No. 1 King by 20 points after the semifinals at the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships.


Both teams came in with 10 semifinalists, and they were paired off against each other in four of those semifinal bouts. King was favored in three of the four matches.


Right off the bat, North Central took control, when No. 4 Madison Avila of NCC upset No. 1 Jessica Corredor of King, 9-0 at 101. King bounced back when No. 2 Sage Mortimer scored a 10-0 technical fall over No. 3 Sydney Petzinger, 10-0.


North Central won the next head-to-head at 123, when No. 2 Amani Jones secured a victory by disqualification after No. 3 Vayle-Rae Baker was cautioned for the third time. King knotted it up with the next battle against North Central, when No. 1 and defending champion Ashlynn Ortega scored a 10-0 technical fall over No. 4 London Houston at 143.


Although they split their head-to-heads, North Central picked up an upset based upon seeds over King.


North Central’s six finalists are No. 4 Madison Avila (101) , No. 3 Jaslynn Gallegos (116), No. 2 Amani Jones (123), No. 3 Yele Aycock (136), No. 1 Yelena Makoyed (170) and No. 2 Traeh Haynes (191).


King’s five finalists are No. 2 Sage Mortimer (109), No. 4 Samara Chavez (116), No. 1 Ana Luciano (136), No. 1 Ashlynn Ortega (143) and No. 2 Cheyenne Bowman (170) .


Rounding out the top five teams were McKendree with 110, Colorado Mesa with 94 and Augsburg with 77.


Consolation rounds and medal matches are continuing, and team scores will change accordingly. The finals are set for 7:00 p.m. CT live on FloWrestling.
