Letona wins bronze, U.S. seventh in team standings after day two of Poland Open

WARSAW, Poland – The second day of women’s freestyle action at the Poland Open concluded on Friday as Maya Letona earned a bronze medal, and the U.S. now sits at seventh in the team standings.
Letona earned a bronze at the Poland Open at 65 kg in a field of nine competitors. She won her first match of the event against an opponent from Germany, picking up a 10-0 technical fall. She bounced back to win her third match in a close 1-1 criteria decision after falling in the second round to win bronze.
At 57 kg, two athletes from the United States were competing in a field of 19. Alexandra Hedrick led the charge, going 3-2 to place fifth. She recorded wins over opponents from Hungary, Germany and U.S. teammate Amanda Martinez. Martinez placed 15th at 57 kg, holding a record of 1-2 at the tournament. She defeated an opponent from Kazakhstan in a tight 3-2 decision in her first match.
Marilyn Garcia rounded out the group of competitors on the second day of action at 68 kg. Garcia fell in both of her matches to opponents from Bulgaria, placing 13th.
The final two women’s freestyle weight classes (72 kg and 76 kg) will be contested on Saturday morning, along with the start of men’s freestyle action. The event will begin at 11 a.m. local time in Warsaw, six hours ahead of the U.S. eastern time zone.
