ROME, Italy – The first session of Greco-Roman action at the Matteo Pellicone ranking series event in Italy wrapped up this morning. The first three weight classes were wrestled in round-robin brackets. At 55 kg, Max Nowry of Army WCAP captured a bronze medal after the round-robin ended in a three-way tie. At 130 kg, Cohlton Schultz of the Sunkist Kids, moves on to the bronze-medal match this afternoon.

In his first match, Nowry defeated Mohammed Hosseinvand of Iran, a 2016 and 2017 Cadet Asian Champion. He was put down on passivity in the first period and turned for two. Nowry, a three-time World Team member, then scored a reversal and two turns with a trap arm gut wrench to take the lead, 5-3. After being hit with passivity in the second period, he defended well in par terre for the 5-4 victory. Nowry later fell to Tita Florin of Romania, 2-0, after being hit twice with passivity. Hosseinvand defeated Florin 11-7, and Nowry finished third in the round-robin bracket based upon tie-breaking criteria.

Schultz lost his first match to Sabah Shariati of Azerbaijan, 10-0. Shariati went on to win in the semifinals which pulled Schultz back into the tournament. Schultz came out strong against his opponent in repechage, Attila Vitek of Hungary. Scoring on a passivity call, a pushout and a takedown for a 4-2 win, he secured a spot in the medal rounds against Beka Kandelaki of Azerbaijan later today. Schultz is a two-time World Team member, has been on several age-level world teams and currently wrestles for Arizona State. Both Nowry and Schultz are 2022 World Team members.

The four other Greco-Roman athletes who competed this morning were 2022 World Team members, none of which advanced to the medal rounds. In the round-robin weights, Ildar Hafizov (60 kg) went 0-3 and 2016 Olympian Jesse Thielke (63 kg) went 0-2, losing to 2021 World Champion and 2020 Olympian, Victor Ciobanu of Moldova. Alejandro Sancho (67 kg) and Alan Vera (87 kg) both went 0-1, and were not drawn back into repechage when the opponent who beat them failed to reach the finals.

The Matteo Pellicone is the third ranking series event of the season and will help determine the seeds for the 2022 Senior World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, Sept. 10-18.

The action can be streamed live on FloWrestling. Rome is six hours ahead of the U.S. Eastern time zone.
