TULSA, Okla. – The 14U Girls National Dual final was a meeting between the returning champion, Pennsylvania, and Washington, who had an incredible run to overpower Wisconsin for a spot in the finals on Saturday.
Pennsylvania, who swept all six opponents in pool competition, continues a winning tradition after defeating Washington 39-20 for the national title. Morgan Hyland (Pennsylvania) set the tone of the dual at 79 pounds with a technical fall over Alyse Gudde (Washington). Hyland had two four-point moves in the match and finished with a perfect 13-0 score.
Alysiana Ierley (Pennsylvania) followed up Hyland with a pin over Bailee Wagner (Washington) at 85 pounds. Ierley controlled the match, scoring two takedowns to lead 4-0. She took Wagner to her back with 20 seconds left in the period for the fall to put Pennsylvania up 9-0.
After a forfeit at 92 pounds, Pennsylvania was up 14-0. The winning streak continued at 97 pounds as Madison Birth (Pennsylvania) unleashed against Elyssa Armendariz (Washington). Birth took Armendariz to her back with a double leg twice, both worth four points. She then secured the extra point for her team with a half to a pin.
Washington’s Malia Ottow (101), a 2021 12U national champion, put a stop to the Pennsylvania run. Ottow rushed Kylee Trostle (Pennsylvania) out of bounds for one point early in the match. Trostle took the lead with a go-behind, but Ottow turned it around with a reversal and a pin with a half for Washington’s first points of the dual.
Lillian Rumsey (Pennsylvania) halted any Washington momentum with the fall over Kamryn Mason (Washington) at 105 pounds in 40 seconds. Rumsey headlocked Mason to her back for the pin, adding five more points on the board for Pennsylvania to lead 24-5.
At 110 pounds Daylee Watson (Pennsylvania) secured another bonus-point win with a fall over Adalyne Montiel (Washington). The match was high-scoring, tied at 14-14, before Watson took Montiel to her back, scoring four, and securing the fall.
Berkley McCullough got it done for Washington over Ava Golding (Pennsylvania) with a fall in the first period at 119 pounds. Golding was up 3-2, until Berkley defended a shot to Golding’s back for the pin with 21 seconds left in the period.
The next three bouts were won by fall. The 127 pound bout was all Pennsylvania. Julissa Ortiz (Pennsylvania) tripped Sara Ortega (Washington) to her back for the pin with 47 seconds left in the first period. The team score rose to 34-10. Micayla Yates (Washington) found success over Adrianna Bowling (Pennsylvania) at 136 pounds with a fall in the first period. Jameson Strickland (Pennsylvania) pinned Karlee Brummett (Washington) with a power half in the final seconds of the first period.
With a double-forfeit at 72 pounds, Isabella Chapa (Washington) finished the dual with a win for Washington over Sierra Ripka (Pennsylvania). The score was even at 2-2 before Chapa came out on top of a headlock attempt from Ripka to lead 4-2. Due to an injury, Ripka could not finish the match and the final team score of 39-20 was locked in.
To reach the finals, Pennsylvania defeated Michigan 35-23 and Washington upset preliminary pool champions Wisconsin 32-28. In an extremely close third-place match, Michigan defeated Wisconsin 32-31. This was a rematch of the preliminary pool dual meet where Michigan fell to Wisconsin 34-29. Thanks to four pins, Michigan was able to avenge that loss and take third place.
