Olympic champs Mensah Stock, Snyder and Olympic medalists Gilman, Cox take 1-0 series lead at Final X Stillwater

STILLWATER, Okla. – The first session is in the books at Final X Stillwater, with 15 athletes taking a one-match-to-none lead in their best of three championship series on Friday afternoon.
Among those winning their first matches were 2020 Olympic champion Tamyra Mensah Stock of USOPTC/TMWC (68 kg women’s freestyle) and 2016 Olympic champion Kyle Snyder of Nittany Lion WC/TMWC (97 kg men’s freestyle).
Both won by technical falls. Mensah Stock stopped Sienna Ramirez of Southern Oregon WC, 14-3, while Snyder defeated former college teammate Kollin Moore of Ohio RTC/TMWC, 11-0. Both have won World titles, Snyder twice (2015 and 2017) and Mensah Stock once (2019).

Two other Olympic medalists moved a 1-0 series lead, 2020 Olympic bronze medalist Thomas Gilman of Nittany Lion WC/TMWC (57 kg men’s freestyle) and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist J’den Cox of Cliff Keen WC/TMWC (92 kg men’s freestyle). Both are also past World champions, Cox two times.
Gilman scored an impressive 12-2 technical fall over Arujau (Spartan Combat RTC/TMWC), while Cox edged Nathan Jackson (New Jersey RTC/NYAC), 4-2
In a rematch of the 2021 World Team Trials finals series, 2021 World bronze medalist Jenna Burkert (U.S. Army WCAP) stopped 2019 World champion Jacarra Winchester (USOPTC/TMWC), 6-4. Last year’s World Team Trials series went three matches, won by Burkert.
Another top women’s showdown between past World medalists went to 2018 World bronze medalist Mallory Velte (Beaver Dam RTC/TMWC), who controlled 2021 World bronze medalist Forrest Molinari (Sunkist Kids), 9-1.
A pair of Greco-Roman Olympians jumped to 1-0 series leads, 2012 and 2016 Olympian Ben Provisor of the New York AC (82 kg Greco-Roman) and 2012 Olympian Jesse Thielke of Army WCAP (63 kg Greco-Roman).
Provisor had two big throws for a technical fall over Spencer Woods of Army WCAP, 8-0, while Thielke won a 4-4 criteria decision over Sammy Jones of NYAC.
Other men’s freestylers taking first bout victories were 2021 World silver medalist and local favorite Daton Fix (Cowboy RTC/TMWC) at 61 kg, and Zain Retherford of Nittany Lion WC/TMWC) at 70 kg.
Other women winning first matches were Abigail Nette of Army WCAP (59 kg) and Dymond Guilford of USOPTC/TMWC (76 kg).
Other Greco-Roman winners of bout one were Max Nowry of Army WCAP (55 kg), Patrick Smith of the Minnesota Storm (72 kg) and Cohlton Schultz of Sunkist Kids (130 kg).
Winners of Final X qualify to represent the USA at the 2022 Senior World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia in September.
