ROME, Italy – Erica Pastoriza (43kg) advanced to the semifinals of the women’s freestyle U17 World Championships after going 2-0 this morning in Rome. Semifinals begin at 11 a.m. U.S. ET on Wednesday.

Seeking her second-straight U17 World title, Pastoriza defeated Azerbaijan’s 2022 U17 European silver medalist in her opening bout. She slid into the semifinals after teching Poland’s Dominika Konkel. Next up, she will take on Arina Abdullina of Kazakhstan for a shot at gold.

Joining Pastoriza on a medal hunt Wednesday are Greco-Roman athletes Arvin Khosravy (71kg) and Cody Merrill (92kg). The two will battle for bronze during the medal rounds, beginning at noon U.S. ET.

Khosravy was pulled back into the tournament on Tuesday after the opponent who defeated him advanced to the finals. Khosravy topped Mihael Lukac of Croatia 3-1 in repechage with a passivity point and two step outs to advance to the medal rounds. Lukac placed fifth at the 2022 U17 European Championships. For bronze, Khosravy will take on Ibrahim Ozdemir from Turkey.

At 92 kg, Merrill, who fell in yesterday's Greco-Roman semifinals, is set to face Marcell Gyuricza from Hungary, who took fifth at the 2022 U17 European Championships.

Audrey Jimenez (49kg), Shelby Moore (57kg), Sydney Perry (65kg) and Kaiulani Garcia (73kg) await repechage in women's freestyle. If their opponents who defeated them earlier today advance to the finals, they will be pulled back into the tournament.

In the qualification round, Moore teched Poland’s Michalina Ignaszak, 11-0. In the round of 16, she recovered from a 5-0 deficit using a leg lace to turn Ukraine’s European Bronze medalist Alina Flipovych four times before escaping a pin in the final seconds to win 11-8. She fell in the quarterfinals 10-9 to Japan’s Sowaka Uchida.

Perry also had a round one win over Hungary’s Szonja Szabo, 5-0, before falling to Anju Sato of Japan, 3-0.

Jimenez lost to Fabiana Rinella 9-2, a 2022 U17 European silver medalist from Italy, and Garcia fell 3-1 to Priya, India’s 2021 U17 World Champion, in their first rounds of action.

Zan Fugitt, who competes in Greco-Roman at 60 kg, was eliminated after falling to Kazakhstan’s 2021 U17 bronze World medalist, Yussuf Ashrapov, 14-5 repechage.

Pastoriza wrestles in the semifinals at 11 a.m. U.S. ET, while Merrill and Khosravy go for bronze at noon U.S. ET on Wednesday.
