A Go Fund Me site has been set up to support the family of Kansas high school wrestling star Damian Mendez, who tragically passed away this weekend.

Mendez, who had signed to compete for Div. I North Dakota State next season, was a three-time state champion for Dodge City High School. He has been successful at major USA Wrestling events, as an All-American in freestyle, folkstyle and Greco-Roman at the 16U level, a Preseason Nationals high school finalist and a Southern Plains Junior Regional double champion.

Kansas USA Wrestling and the entire USA Wrestling community is keeping this family in thoughts and prayers. The family has been very active supporting USA Wrestling activities, volunteering for the Southern Plains Regionals and assisting at many local competitions in their community.

Damian Mendez gained his wings on July 3rd 2022. Having a contagious smile and laughter is one of the many things he will be remembered as. He was also admired within the wrestling community not only for his wrestling skills, but also for his leadership skills. Damian made friends wherever he went. He was a graduate of Dodge City High School and was on his way to further his education with a wrestling scholarship to North Dakota State University. His passing will leave holes in many’s hearts. To ease the financial burden with the upcoming bills we are setting up a Go Fund Me account to help. If you are able your donation would be appreciated. Please send prayers for the coming days because this next chapter is going to be difficult.

NDSU Athletics Mourns the Passing of Wrestling Signee Damian Mendez

FARGO, N.D. – On Tuesday, the North Dakota State Wrestling program and head coach Roger Kish announced the passing of incoming freshman Damian Mendez over the weekend.

“It is with sincere sorrow that we have to announce the loss of one of our Bison family members, as we learned of the tragic passing of Damian over the weekend,” said Kish.

Mendez signed with the Bison in March of 2022. He was set to join the Bison this fall and was intending to major in Sport Management at NDSU.

“It is a time of sadness for Damian and his family, as well as our Bison family and the wrestling community,” added Kish. “At this time, we just ask for support and prayers for his family and friends in such a difficult time.”

Mendez was a highly decorated athlete out of Dodge City, Kansas, including being a three-time state champion on the mat. He went undefeated as a senior and set the Kansas high school state record for the most takedowns in a single season.

“We were excited to welcome Damian into our family when he committed to us and he had a bright future ahead of him,” said Kish. “He was such a bright young man and certainly made an impact on our coaching staff and his Bison brothers. He will be truly missed by those that knew him.”
