Historic first WIAA girls state championship in Wisconsin crowns its first 12 state champions
by Special to TheMat.com
LaCrosse, Wis. - History was made in Wisconsin on January 29, 2022, as the inaugural WIAA Girls State Wrestling Championships was held in the La Crosse Center. All told, 12 female athletes were crowned state champions for the first time in history.
The field included 224 contestants from 105 schools. Although team scores were not kept, Milwaukee Ronald Reagan, 15, and Holmen, 13, had the most individual participants.
The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, the oldest high school athletic association organized in the country, was the 27th state activities association to officially sanction girls wrestling as a sport in June 2020, with this year's tournament serving as the first ever state championships.
The first-ever individual girls state champion in Wisconsin was 100 pounder Brooke Corrigan from DePere. Corrigan, a ninth grader, defeated senior Karina Torres in a tight match by score of 7-5.
In the finals at 126, Jefferson High School's nationally ranked Sofia Brynman-Metcalf won by fall in 2:40.
The loudest cheering section was likely behind 132-pound state champion Kylie Rule from Mineral Point who blanked Bonduel's Madalyn Sokolski 9-0.
In the lone finals bout needing double overtime to be decided, New London's Hailie Krueger defeated Chloe LaRue of Cuba City/Benton/Southwestern 5-3 at 145 pounds.
The highest ranked Wisconsin prep wrestler competing this weekend (8th at 164 pounds), Alexandra Hofrichter from Antigo, was victorious by fall in the first place match at 152 pounds.
In the last bout of the night, Kaylie Upson from Phillips won by fall in 1:20.
As part of USA Wrestling's Athlete Appearance Program, Olympic Silver Medalist and six-time world champion Adeline Gray was in attendance and handed out awards to all place winners.
In conjunction with the state championships, the WIAA kicked off its year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX with a celebratory social before the finals. The social included trailblazers in women’s sports in Wisconsin and those instrumental in ensuring this opportunity for high school girls in Wisconsin.
In attendance of the state tournament was Elliot Hopkins from the National Federation of State High School Associations. Hopkins, who serves on USA Wrestling's Board of Directors, is the NFHS Director of Sports, Sanctioning and Student Services and serves as the NFHS liaison to wrestling.
Historical note: Two notable American women's freestyle wrestlers, Alyssa Lampe (Tomahawk) and Macey Kilty (Stratford), both were WIAA state runners-up during their high school careers.
