COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team claimed eight bouts, earning bonus points in three, to claim a dominant 29-8 win at No. 7 Ohio State in its Big Ten Conference dual opener on Friday night (Jan. 14) at the Covelli Center. The Wolverines have claimed three straight against Ohio State since 2019.
Graduate student Nick Suriano and sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin set the tone with back-to-back major decisions at the lowerweights. Suriano, ranked No. 1 at 125 pounds, stayed unbeaten in a Michigan singlet with an 11-3 win over 18th-ranked Malik Heinselman. He scored four takedowns, including two in the first period, and picked up a stall point and riding-time point to secure the bonus win -- his third in three matches this season.
Ragusin, ranked eighth at 133 pounds, defeated Will Betancourt 14-5 with six takedowns, including three in the opening frame to build up a big early lead. Betancourt used an escape and a penalty point early in the third period before Ragusin converted on a go-behind and rode out the match -- earning 4:16 in riding-time advantage -- to re-establish his major-decision margin.
Graduate student Stevan Micic, ranked fourth at 141 pounds, bounced back from last Sunday's loss with a 12-7 decision over No. 21 Dylan D'Emilio. Micic cruised for the bulk of the match, scoring on two single-leg takedowns in the first period and tacking on one apiece in the second and third. Pushing for bonus points late, he gave up a takedown in the final minute but earned a quick reversal to finish the match on top.
Ohio State (5-1, 1-1 Big Ten) got on the board with a win at 149 pounds, where junior/sophomore Cole Mattin scored the first takedown and hung close with No. 2 Sammy Sasso but dropped a 9-4 decision. Senior/junior Will Lewan, ranked 15th, scored takedowns late in the first and third periods -- and nearly had another late in the second -- to rally to a 6-3 decision against Jashon Hubbard at 157 pounds.
The Buckeyes picked up their second -- and last -- win after the intermission at 165 pounds as seventh-ranked Carson Kharchla earned a 21-6 technical fall against senior/junior Pat Nolan, who bumped up two weight classes to step in for Michigan after wrestling primarily at 141 pounds this season.
Michigan (5-0, 1-0 Big Ten) closed out the dual meet with four straight ranked wins, including back-to-back top-10 matchups at 174 and 184 pounds. Graduate student Logan Massa, ranked sixth at 174, used a huge third period to rally to a 14-8 decision over seventh-ranked Ethan Smith. After giving up a late counter takedown in the second, he claimed his first lead with a single leg with 1:11 remaining, broke it open with four near-fall points off a bow and arrow and rode out the match to accumulate 1:04 in time advantage.
Graduate student Myles Amine, ranked second nationally, converted on an overtime scramble to beat seventh-ranked Kaleb Romero 3-1 at 184 pounds. After two flurries early in the sudden-victory period, Amine used a low leg attack to initiate a third and wrapped up both legs to come out on top with 36 seconds remaining. He improved to 7-0 on the season and owns a pair of top-10 wins.
Graduate student Patrick Brucki, ranked eighth at 197 pounds, picked up his second straight ranked win this semester with a 5-2 decision over 20th-ranked Gavin Hoffman -- also his second win over the Buckeye wrestler this season. Brucki struck quickly in the first with a single leg and added another takedown -- a single with a double-leg finish -- with just one second remaining in the second period.
Senior heavyweight Mason Parris, ranked second, closed out the dual with a first-period pin against 12th-ranked Tate Orndorff in the final bout. Parris finished on a double-leg shot midway through the period and came down with a leg turk, which he used to four count before adjusting to collect the fall at 2:21. Parris owns a 7-0 record with seven bonus wins this season.
Michigan will kick off a three-match homestand with a pair of Crisler Center duals next weekend. The Wolverines host Penn State on Friday (Jan. 21) at 6 p.m., live on Big Ten Network, before welcoming Rutgers on Sunday (Jan. 23) at 4 p.m. Tickets are still available for both contests through the U-M Ticket Office.

No. 2 Sammy Sasso put the first points on the board for the Buckeyes at 149 for his 26th-consecutive win in dual competitions. Sasso's streak includes wins in 19-consecutive Big Ten duals.
