U.S. Beach Nationals return to Carolina Beach, N.C., May 20-21, with competition in eight age groups

by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling

The U.S. Beach National Championships will return to Carolina Beach, N.C., on May 20-21.

This will be the eighth time that Carolina Beach has hosted the U.S. Beach Nationals, the most of any city. In 2021, the event was held in Jacksonville, Fla. for one season.

This is the annual national championships for Beach Wrestling, which is an associated style within USA Wrestling and United World Wrestling.

The tournament will be once again be held on the popular public beach in Carolina Beach, right next to the boardwalk.

Beach Wrestling is a fun but challenging style of the sport. Points are scored through takedowns from the feet, or step outs from the ring. It is a very fast-paced match. Beach Wrestling requires a variety of skills, and athletes who wrestle on the Beach are able to improve their wrestling in the other styles.

The age divisions for the U.S. Beach Nationals are: 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U, Junior, Senior and Masters. There is competition for both men and women, Weight classes will be determined using the blocked weight system for all divisions except for Senior Men and Senior Women.

The weight classes on the Senior level are:

Senior Men: (Born 2004 or Before) 70 KG, 80 KG, 90 KG, +90 KG

Senior Women: (Born 2004 or Before) 50 KG, 60 KG, 70 KG, +70 KG

International athletes are welcome in all divisions except for Senior Men and Senior Women.

There will be an optional weigh-in on Friday, May 20 for all divisions except Senior Men and Women at the Lazy Pirate from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Senior Men and Women must weigh-in on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk Stage. Athletes in all other divisions can weigh in either at the optional Friday night weigh in, or on Saturday morning at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk Stage.

Registration has not yet opened, and a separate announcement will be made when athletes can register online.

In the past, there has been a U.S. Belt National Championships held with the event, but that will not be the case in 2022. This year, the competition will only include Beach Wrestling.

The results from the U.S. Beach Nationals are used as a criteria for the creation of U.S. teams to compete in United World Wrestling Beach Events on the international level.

For Senior athletes, five events have been announced as part of the 2022 Beach World Series. They are set for Odessa, Ukraine (May 28-29), Sanxenxo, Spain (June 18-19), Saint Laurent du Var, France (July 1-2), Katerini, Greece (July 9-10) and Constanta, Romania (September 3-4). Athletes receive points from each of the Beach World Series events, with the athlete who has scored the most points in each weight class declared World Champion. UWW awards prize money from the Beach World Series.

The U17 and U20 Beach World Championships will be held in Constanta, Romania, September 1-2.

The U.S. sent its largest delegation of age-group wrestlers to the U17 and U20 Beach World Championships in 2021, which was also held in Constanta, Romania.

While the USA has won a number of medals at international events, Team USA still seeks its first gold medalist at either a Beach World Series event or a Beach World Championships event.
