Beach wrestling in 2028 Olympics? Maybe!! Attend U.S. Beach Nationals in Carolina Beach on May 21 and give it a try

by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling

There are a lot of good reasons to attend the 2022 U.S. Beach National Championships, which is returning to scenic Carolina Beach, N.C., on Saturday, May 21.

Beach wrestling is fun. Beach wrestling is a challenging and competitive sport. Beach wrestling can help improve your skills in other wrestling styles. Beach wrestling can lead to competing overseas. And, one more time, beach wrestling is fun.

But there is another very, very good reason. United World Wrestling (UWW), the international wrestling federation, is working to add Beach Wrestling for women at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. This proposal would allow wrestling to reach gender equity in the Olympics, while continuing its commitment to Greco-Roman.

Will this actually happen? It is truly possible. UWW has told USA Wrestling many times recently that this is their quest, and the proposal is being considered by the International Olympic Committee. UWW has a firm commitment to Beach Wrestling. The honest answer to this question is Maybe!!!

At the 2022 U.S. Beach Nationals in Carolina Beach, national champions will be crowned in the following age divisions: 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U, Junior, Senior Men, Senior Women and Masters.

Register for the 2022 U.S. Beach Nationals

The 2022 U.S. Beach Nationals is part of the qualifying process to send U.S. athletes to the 2022 Beach World Series events in Europe for Senior men and women athletes. Stops on the Beach Worlds Series this year include Turkey, Spain, France, Greece and Romania. (see 2022 Beach World Series schedule below). Registration deadlines are coming up soon for Spain and France. Athletes interested in competing should contact Gary Abbott at

The Beach World Series in 2022 is expected to the part of the qualifying process for the 2023 ANOC World Beach Games in Indonesia. This is a major event supported by the IOC and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

USA Wrestling is also working to organize a large and strong team of young men and women to compete at the 2022 U17 and U20 Beach World Championships, set for Constanta, Romania, September 23-24. In 2021, the United States sent its largest delegation of age-group athletes ever to the Beach World Championships.

This year’s U.S. Beach Nationals will be the first event of the soon-to-be-announced 2022 U.S. Beach Tour of America, which will feature selected state- and local-level USA Wrestling sanctioned Beach competitions held across the nation.

There is still time to register and make plans to get together on Carolina Beach for a great competition. Now is a perfect time to test yourself in a sport being considered for Olympic status.
