The United States will enter a team of men and women in the 2022 U17 and U20 Beach World Championships, as well as the 2022 Constanta Beach World Series Final (for Senior athletes), all set for Maiama Beach in Constanta, Romania, September 1-4.

The U17 Beach World Championships will be held on Thursday, September 1. The U20 Beach World Championships are set for Friday, September 2. The Constanta Beach World Series Final is scheduled for Saturday, September 3 and Sunday, September 4.

It is a great honor to represent your nation at an international competition overseas. Beach wrestling is both fun and challenging and is a great test of your wrestling abilities. Competing in international Beach wrestling is an opportunity that all motivated wrestlers should look into and consider seriously.

Funding: This is a self-funded tour, meaning that all expenses for the tour will be the responsibility of the participant. That includes airfare, Room and Board at official UWW hotel, UWW license fee and other event fees.

Passport, UWW License and USA Wrestling membership: Everyone participating will need a current valid U.S. passport (which does not expire within six months) as well as a UWW Beach license which must be purchased by July 26. All participants must have a new 2022-23 USA Wrestling athlete membership (which becomes available on August 20 through the USA Wrestling membership system at usawmembership.com)

What is needed for UWW License: For athletes and coaches who will participate in the UWW Beach Worlds events, you must have a current UWW License. If you do not have this, you will need to get the following to USA Wrestling before the July 26 deadline: 1) Copy of your passport; 2) Headshot in jpg format; 3) UWW medical form (for athletes only); 4) Payment through the USA Wrestling membership portal, Visa or Mastercard only.

Room and Board costs: Those competing in Constanta must stay at the official hotel and pay the event room and board fee of 160 Swiss Francs per day (which is approximately $175). This must be paid in advance to USA Wrestling prior to July 26. There is a three-night minimum. Once you have been approved for your team spot, you will be sent an invoice through your profile in the USA Wrestling membership system.

Flights to Constanta: The local organizers have identified two airports that athletes should consider for arrival in Romania, the Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport (CND) outside of Constanta, or the Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP), outside of Bucharest. You must provide Jaimie McNab of USA Wrestling with your flight itinerary by August 12.

Equipment sizes needed immediately: There are official uniforms for beach wrestling. According to the UWW guidelines, men/boys wear “board shorts or biking shorts.” Women/girls wear “board shorts or biking shorts” on bottom and “either a sports bra (preferably) or a form-fitting rash guard.” Traditionally, USA Wrestling sponsor Nike provides our Beach Team with this equipment. When you notify USA Wrestling with your desire to compete, we need to immediately have your uniform and shirt sizes (along with your complete mailing address) in order to begin the equipment ordering process.

2023 World Beach Games qualifying event: This is the third of five Beach World Series events that help set the field for the 2023 World Beach Games in Bali, Indonesia, next August 5-12. After the event in Romania, the first two Beach World Series events of 2023 will complete the qualifying process. The top eight athletes per weight category and gender based upon a point system from the five qualifiers will earn a quota place for their National Olympic Committee at the World Beach Games.

Additional information to those interested: Once an individual notifies USA Wrestling that they may wish to compete in the Constanta beach events, additional information will be sent, including the schedule, the Beach Wrestling rules and other relevant information. Some additional information can be found on the United World Wrestling site at: https://uww.org/governance/regulations-beach-wrestling

USA Team Selection criteria

The United States can enter up to three athletes in each weight class. While there has not yet been a situation where more than three have requested to compete, USA Wrestling will select the team members if there are more than three requests under the following criteria.

1) Medalist at 2022 U.S. Beach Nationals in Carolina Beach, N.C.

2) Medalist at a past Beach World Championships or Beach World Series event

3) Participation at the 2022 U.S. Beach Nationals in Carolina Beach, N.C.

4) Participation in a past Beach World Championships or Beach World Series event

5) Points scored in the 2022 U.S. Beach Tour of America

6) Participation in a past U.S. Beach Nationals event

7) No previous participation in a USA Wrestling Beach event at any level.

We must hear from athletes who wish to compete and fall within one of the criteria by July 15.

After July 15, the spots will be given on a first-come, first-served basis to those completing all of the requirements, including payment for their room and board.

Help make U.S. wrestling history

Fact: The USA has won only one gold medal at a UWW Beach World Championships or a UWW Beach World Series event, going back two decades. That gold medal went to Amit Elor, the 2019 U17 Women’s Beach World champion at Over 70 kg. There has never been a Senior level gold medalist.

Fact: The USA has not won a team trophy at a UWW Beach World Championships or a UWW Beach World Series event. Team standings are held at each Beach World Championships and UWW Beach World Series event.

Fact: United World Wrestling is proposing Beach Wrestling to the International Olympic Committee as a possible discipline for future Olympic Games.

Isn’t it time for the USA to take home some Beach hardware? Putting together a large and talented team for Constanta, Romania will give us that chance this year!!!
