No. 24 North Carolina downs No. 19 Pittsburgh on Senior Night in Chapel Hill, 19-12 -

CHAPEL HILL - The No. 24 North Carolina wrestling team secured a 19-12 victory over No. 19 Pittsburgh in Carmichael Arena on Friday night. The Tar Heels also secured a perfect 6-0 record at home this season with the win. The last UNC team to go undefeated at home was the 2001-02 team, who went 10-0.
"It feels good to send the seniors out with a win," head coach Coleman Scott said. "It's always good to get an important win on senior night in front of a big crowd."
To kick-off, the dual Spencer Moore dropped a tough 2-1 sudden victory thanks to a second stall call. Late in the third period, a takedown gave Joe Heilmann a massive 3-2 win over No. 7 Micky Phillippi at 133. The Panthers would retake the lead with Cole Matthews grinding out a 3-2 decision over previously unbeaten Kizhan Clarke. The Tar Heels would soon tie the match at six with a solid 8-2 decision by Zach Sherman.
Austin O'Connor picked up the 2-1 decision to move to 15-1 on the season, while Michael Goldfeder dropped an 8-1 decision to Jake Wentzel. At 174, Clay Lautt fought hard and earned the 4-2 decision to grow the Tar Heel match lead to 12-9. Gavin Kane would come in clutch with the 17-8 major decision over Gregg Harvey.
In the 197-pound bout, Max Shaw battled but eventually fell to Nino Bonaccorsi 7-1. Brandon Whitman locked up the dual win for the Tar Heels in the heavyweight bout with a 4-3 decision over Jake Slinger.
North Carolina returns to action on Friday, Feb. 11, as they travel to Blacksburg to face No. 7 Virginia Tech. The Tar Heels and Hokies meet at 7 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
