It's with a very heavy heart that we let the community know that Jacob Rivera, one of our Welding Technology students and member of the Maverick Wrestling team, passed away this morning following a tragic car accident near Hays, KS. Jacob was an incredible young man and this is a tremendous loss for our Maverick family.

Three other Northwest Tech students - Victoria Borrego, Chelsy Mendoza, and Dalton Hall - were in the vehicle as well and sustained injuries from the wreck. At this time all three are in stable condition and doing as well as can be expected given the severity of the accident, but they need your continued thoughts and prayers.

For those who may need it, we will have a counselor on campus tomorrow morning from 7:00 am - 9:00 am in the west side of the library. Please don't hesitate to stop and see the counselor.

Please keep the families of Jacob, Victoria, Chelsy, and Dalton in your thoughts and prayers during this time.

Editor's Note: All four athletes involved in the accident are part of the Northwest Tech wrestling program, with Rivera and Hall on the men's team and Borrego and Mendoza on the women's team.

A GoFundMe site has been set up, entitled Tribute in Honor of Jacob “Pee Wee” Rivera

The information on the site says this:

We are the family of Jacob “Pee Wee” Rivera. Many of our friends and family members have asked us to start a go fund me page. We are doing this in honor of Pee Wee, for the ones who would like to give a gift in his memory. Jacob “Pee Wee” Rivera was taken from us in the early hours of Sunday morning. He was currently in Kansas attending Northwest Tech College, pursuing his wrestling career and a welding degree. He was an amazing kid who was full of life and lived it to the fullest. His parents Anna Lujan and Eric Rivera give their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to everyone who has reached out to them. Pee Wee has truly touched the lives of so many people through out the country. They say legends never die, he will be forever legendary in our eyes. We love you!
